The MR Internship Program hosts ongoing internships during the fall and spring seasons, as well as winter and summer internships geared toward college and university students and recent graduates. The MR Internship Program has a work-study structure — interns work with and are mentored by MR staff and, in exchange, receive access to MR classes and select workshops.

The Internship Program offers a range of internship positions for artists and arts workers ages 18 and up. Movement Research is equipped to work with students who are seeking credits through a college program or course. Read on for details on the positions, openings, and how to apply.

Production Internship (In-Person)

Open to All.

This internship position is a 6 month commitment for the Fall-Winter 2024-25 season (September 2024 – March 2025); the average weekly commitment is between 8-12 hours per week, though it may vary according to credit requirements. The weekly schedule will be determined in collaboration with MR staff. Interviews will take place in August 2024. Training and start date in early September 2024.

There are 2 Programs & Events internship positions available for degree-seeking students.

Production Interns works closely with Movement Research at the Judson Church Program Manager, Programs & Events Manager and Associates to facilitate Movement Research’s public programming. This position works primarily in-person and assists in the management and implementation of the Movement Research at the Judson Church performance series, Open Performance, GPS Chats, Studies Projects, Movement Research Festivals, and Gala. Duties include space set-up, audience and front-of-house management, and technical assistance.

Candidates should have experience with Zoom, Google Docs and/or Microsoft Excel and Word, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, punctuality, and attention to detail. Knowledge of Filemaker Pro or experience with databases is not required but helpful. Please include your anticipated weekly schedule and availability when applying.

The MR internships follow a work-study format, in that interns are encouraged to participate in programming as an on-site liaison between artists and MR staff.

Programs & Events Internship (Hybrid)

Open to All. Degree-Seeking Candidates Preferred:

This internship position is a 6 month commitment for the Fall/Winter 2024 season (September 2024 – February 2025); the average weekly commitment is between 8-12 hours per week, though hours may vary according to credit requirements and programming needs. The schedule will be determined in collaboration with MR staff. Interviews will begin in August 2024. Training will begin in early September 2024, for a mid September 2024 start date.

There are 3-5 Programs & Events internship positions available for the Fall/Winter seasons.

The Programs & Events Interns work closely with the Programs and Events Manager and Associates to organize and implement Movement Research’s artist programs and events. The primary duty is to assist in the management and implementation of Movement Research classes and workshops, including the MELT workshop series, as an onsite liaison between faculty, artists, students, and MR staff. MR internships follow a work-study format, in that interns are encouraged to participate in the classes, workshops, and/or events they work, while also gaining access to nearly all Movement Research classes for free. This position works in-person, with limited opportunity for remote work.

Programs & Events Interns can expect a fairly consistent schedule in coordination with Movement Research’s ongoing class schedule. The Programs & Events Internship also has the opportunity to support events such as GPS Chats, Studies Projects, and the Movement Research at the Judson Church performance series in a front of house capacity.

Programs & Events Internship: Winter MELT (In-Person)

Open to All. Degree-Seeking Candidates Preferred:

This internship position is a 4-6 week commitment for Winter MELT (January 2024); the expected weekly commitment is between 10-15 hours per week, which includes time spent participating in workshops. The schedule will be determined in collaboration with MR staff.

Interviews will take place in early November 2023. Training and start date in early January 2024.
There are 1-2 Programs & Events MELT internships available. These positions are open to degree-seeking and/or work/study candidates.

The Programs & Events MELT Intern works closely with the Programs & Events Manager and Associates to facilitate Movement Research’s public programming during the MELT workshop series. This position works primarily in-person and follows a work-study format, in that interns are encouraged to participate in programming as the on-site liaison between faculty, artists, and MR staff.

Candidates should have experience with Zoom, Google Docs and/or Microsoft Excel and Word, strong organizational skills, punctuality, and attention to detail.

Outreach & Engagement Mentee (Hybrid)

Open to All.

This hybrid mentee position is a 6-month commitment for the Winter/Spring 2024 season; the minimum weekly commitment is between 10-15 hours per week. Interviews and training will take place in late January 2024. The start date is late January 2024.

The Outreach & Engagement Mentee works with the Media and Communications team to maintain Movement Research’s presence and activity on social media platforms and keep detailed accuracy/inventory of digital media.

Tasks include:

  • tracking statistics/audience engagement,
  • corresponding with artists to retrieve photos/video, and organizing media files.
  • Engage with community on social media by viewing stories, responding to DMs, and addressing comments if necessary.

The ideal candidate is:

  • interested in storytelling, communications, digital media & technology, dance, and performing arts administration.
  • willing to attend and document MR classes and events following a flexible schedule.
  • curious about marketing & branding strategies, visual literacy, digital archives, and social/community engagement.
  • uses Social Media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, and/or reads blogs and digital content.
  • a good and concise writer.

This position will be a combination of in-person and remote work.

Performance Journal Archives & Subscription Internship (In-Person)

Open to All.

This is an on-site position that will work 10 hours per week. Tentative start date in early September with an end date in December (opportunity to extend if desired). This performance Journal Archives and Subscriptions intern works closely with the Operations department to assist MRPJ mailing and distribution. Responsibilities include tracking journal subscriptions, recording PJ Inventory and permanent archives, assisting with PJ and Merchandise mailing, and executing PJ distribution throughout NYC performance venues and art spaces.

Ideal candidates should have strong attention to detail, ability to meet deadlines, and excellent organizational and communication skills. Experience with Google suite and Microsoft excel is a plus.

This is a fully in-person internship.

Operations Internship (In-Person)

Open to All.   

This is an on-site position that will work 10-15 hours per week. Tentative start date in early September with an end date in December (opportunity to extend if desired). The Operations Intern works closely with the Operations Department on matters related to the day-to-day operations of Movement Research, including studio maintenance, rehearsal bookings, office administration, and email/mail management. The Operations Intern reports directly to the Operations Associate. Candidates should have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and excellent email etiquette. Experience with Microsoft Suite, Google Drive and Mac Mail are a plus but not required.

This is a fully in-person internship.

Critical Correspondence Internship (Remote)

Open to All. Degree-Seeking Candidates Preferred:  

This remote internship position is a one-year commitment of approximately 10 hours per week beginning in October 2024. Hours may be distributed unevenly depending on season and workflow. The intern is required to attend the weekly editorial team meeting virtually on Sundays and check-in meetings with the Media and Communications Manager. A weekly schedule will be determined in collaboration with MR staff and the CC editorial team. There are 2 CC internships available for the Fall. 

Intern responsibilities include:

– Manage Audio Files.
-Transcribe/Edit interviews and conversations.
– Assist with website maintenance.
-Keep a calendar of events, interviews, and other timely matters.
-Support Advertising Process & Research.
-Manage Critical Correspondence Newsletter & Instagram Platform.
-Keep track of Movement Research recording devices when needed.

The ideal candidate will have the following:

– An interest in engaging contemporary and experimental dance and/or performance work through language.
– Familiarity with web platforms.
– Writing and editing skills. – Interview/ Transcribing skills.
– Ability to work independently.
– Audio and video editing skills also greatly appreciated but not required.
– Investment in the mission and goals of the publication.
-Bilingual English/ Spanish is desirable (Critical Correspondence will be publishing a few Spanish entries this year.)

This internship is largely self-directed and the intern will work remotely. It’s a good opportunity to gain experience in the field and hone editorial and critical thinking skills.

Mission and Goals of CC:

Critical Correspondence (CC) is an artist-driven project of Movement Research that aims to activate, develop and increase the visibility of critical discourse on dance and movement-based performance work. We initiate conversations and writings to map the language surrounding current practices and to establish a dialogue between artists and others who are engaged with this work. We also host contributions from artists/writers traveling, working in different localities, or reporting from a particular working process.
