The MR Internship Program hosts ongoing internships during the fall and spring seasons, as well as winter and summer internships geared toward college and university students and recent graduates. The MR Internship Program has a work-study structure — interns work with and are mentored by MR staff and, in exchange, receive access to MR classes and select workshops.
The Internship Program offers a range of internship positions for artists and arts workers ages 18 and up. Movement Research is equipped to work with students who are seeking credits through a college program or course. Read on for details on the positions, openings, and how to apply.

Program & Events Internship
This internship position is a 6-month commitment. Generally, the Programs Team operates on a Fall/Winter season (Sept–Feb) and Spring/Summer season (Mar–Aug), however we do accept applications throughout the year. The minimum weekly commitment is between 8-12 hours per week. The schedule will be determined in collaboration with MR staff.
The Programs & Events Interns work closely with the Programs and Events Manager and Associates to organize and implement Movement Research’s artist programs and events. The primary duty is to act as class registrars and studio attendants as part of the implementation of Movement Research classes and workshops, including the MELT workshop series. Programs & Events Interns can expect a fairly consistent schedule in coordination with Movement Research’s ongoing classes and workshop schedule. This position works primarily in-person with limited opportunity for remote work.

The Programs & Events Internship also has the opportunity to support events such as GPS Chats, Studies Projects, and the Movement Research at the Judson Church performance series in a front of house capacity.
This internship follows a work exchange format in that interns are able to take most MR classes for free in exchange for their hours worked. MR is not able to provide internship stipends at this time.
The internship is open to all those interested in engaging with MR Classes, Workshops, and Events as part of the Programs Team, and encourage students in degree-seeking programs to apply for course credit.
Candidates should have experience with Zoom, Google Docs and/or Microsoft Excel and Word, as well as strong organizational skills, punctuality, and attention to detail. As this is a public-facing role, excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential. Knowledge of Filemaker Pro or experience with databases is not required but helpful.
Interviews will take place in mid-August for internships starting in the Fall, and mid-December for internships starting in the Spring. Training typically begins in the weeks prior to the internship start dates. Applications are also accepted on a rolling basis.

Production Internship
This internship position is a 6 month commitment for the Fall-Winter 2025-26 season (mid-September 2025 – mid-March 2026); the average weekly commitment is between 8-12 hours per week, though it may vary according to the programming schedule. The weekly schedule will be determined in collaboration with MR staff. Interviews will take place in mid-late August 2025. Training and start date in mid-September 2025.
There are 3 Production Internship positions available.
Production Interns works closely with the Director of Movement Research at the Judson Church, Programs & Events Manager and Associates to facilitate Movement Research’s public programming. This position works primarily in-person and assists in the management and implementation of the Movement Research at the Judson Church performance series, Open Performance, GPS Chats, Studies Projects, Movement Research Festivals, and Gala. Duties include space set-up, audience and front-of-house management, technical assistance, and acting as the on-site liaison between artists and MR staff.
Candidates should have experience with Zoom, Google Docs and/or Microsoft Excel and Word, strong organizational and interpersonal skills, punctuality, and attention to detail. Knowledge of audio/visual tools, cameras, and/or recording equipment is helpful but not required. Please include your anticipated weekly schedule and availability when applying.

Development Internship
This is an on-site position that will work 10 hours per week. The Development Intern assists the Development Team with tasks that vary by season, including support for our individual donation program – MR Friends, annual reports, prospect funders research, the distribution of the Movement Research Performance Journal (MRPJ), and ongoing tracking documents for proposals and reporting. Additionally, the ideal candidate possesses a strong interest in engaging contemporary and experimental dance and/or performance work through written language and statistical data. A minimum of 10 hours of work will be required each week, to be completed in the office, at 122 Community Center (150 1st Avenue, New York, NY 10009) as needed, and independently/remotely. Experience with Mac software, Word, Excel and Filemaker strongly encouraged.
This is an in-person internship, with potential remote work.

MR Publishing Internship
Open to All. Degree-Seeking Candidates Preferred.
This remote internship position is a one-year commitment of approximately 10 hours per week beginning in October 2025. Hours may be distributed unevenly depending on season and workflow. Interns will have the opportunity to work across Movement Research’s two publications (Critical Correspondence and the Movement Research Performance Journal) as well as with the main office of Movement Research. The intern is required to attend weekly editorial team meetings and regular check-ins with the Media and Communications Manager (both virtual). A more detailed weekly schedule will be determined in collaboration with MR staff and the CC editorial team.
The MR internships follow a work-study format, in that interns receive free regular MR classes in exchange for hours worked. Interns are encouraged to participate in class, workshop, and event programming as much as possible.
Intern responsibilities include:
– Manage audio files
– Transcribe/edit interviews and conversations
– Assist with website maintenance
– Keep a calendar of events, interviews, and other timely matters
– Support marketing initiatives, advertising, and esearch
– Manage the Critical Correspondence and Movement ResearchPerformance Journal e-Newsletters & Instagram platforms
– Keep track of Movement Research recording devices as needed
The ideal candidate will have the following:
– An interest in engaging contemporary and experimental dance and/or performance work through language.
– Excellent communication skills to check in, respond, and confirm tasks weekly
– Detail-oriented and well organized with experience working in databases and content-generation
– Familiarity with web platforms such as wordpress, mailchimp, instagram
– Writing and editing skills, with a focus on interview editing and transcription skills
– Ability to work independently
– Audio and video editing skills greatly appreciated but not required.

This internship is largely self-directed and the intern will work remotely. It’s a good opportunity to gain experience in the field and hone editorial and critical thinking skills.
Mission and Goals of CC:
Critical Correspondence (CC) is an artist-driven project of Movement Research that aims to activate, develop and increase the visibility of critical discourse on dance and movement-based performance work. We initiate conversations and writings to map the language surrounding current practices and to establish a dialogue between artists and others who are engaged with this work. We also host contributions from artists/writers traveling, working in different localities, or reporting from a particular working process.
Movement Research Performance Journal is a publication created by and for artists, fostering the evolution of written and graphic languages that address current issues of dance and performance.

Operations Internship
This is an on-site position that will work 10-15 hours per week. Tentative start date in early September with an end date in December (opportunity to extend if desired). The Operations Intern works closely with the Operations Department on matters related to the day-to-day operations of Movement Research, including studio maintenance, rehearsal bookings, office administration, and email/mail management. The Operations Intern reports directly to the Operations Associate. Candidates should have strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and excellent email etiquette. Experience with Microsoft Suite, Google Drive and Mac Mail are a plus but not required.
This is a fully in-person internship.
