Workshop Description:

[Consensual Fault Lines or Glitch in the Crossroads, Phase 2 or Soggy Cereal-as-Praxis] takes place in an imaginary queer club space called Club IX, which roughly translates to jaguar within Mayan dialects. This is one of the ancestral lineages that run through Estrellx's blood. For the past several years, Estrellx has conceived of their performance works as occurring within the walls of Club IX with each performance activating a specific room, element, theme, question and dramaturgical texture that they are researching. One of the core through lines within this workshop and Estrellx's choreographic research is this notion of embodied excavation, which is a concept that has been framed by choreographer, Michael Kliën, that is archaeological in nature. The physicality that derives from the process of excavating through the body or from imagining oneself metaphorically digging through one's awareness, somatic archives, and embodied knowing are part of the lexicon of guiding principles that will emerge throughout this workshop. Another core through line deals with dissolving and questioning the borders between where our bodies begin and where they end whilst simultaneously honoring the need that as human beings strong, healthy, and shape-shifting boundaries are critical. How can we honor what we know about our bodies or what we think we know about our bodies and simultaneously surrender to the power of the unseen, of child's play and a beginner's mindset, of that which resists being known through logic and the rational mind? Are you willing to trust your intuition?

Participants will be invited to engage with a series of choreographic scores and somatic frames that are durational, conversational, and heavily rooted in systems of improvisation so that participants can adjust the invitations to the needs of their space and bodies. More specifically, this means that we will be swiftly oscillating between moving, writing, reflecting, dialoguing (in pairs, small groups, the larger group), and resting. Time will become an ally and will bend based on the score or frame we are engaging with. The scores and frames will integrate elements from club dancing, Qi Energetic and Buddhist principles, instant composition and performance and somatics (specifically borrowing from themes Estrellx is encountering within their craniosacral, somatic sex education, and other contexts).

The first and last day of the workshop will include ample time for a check-in and check-out, or an Opening and Closing Circle, which are designed to provide time for participants to share more about what is going on within their emotional-spiritual body, how they are integrating the experience of the workshop, and to energetically draw lines between the questions and desires each participant is bringing into the room.

[Image Description: Estrellx is a Brown-skinned body, wearing a black leather jacket, white pants, red socks, black sneakers, a red baseball cap, a red star necklace. Their body is in mid-movement: right leg extended behind them with both of their arms grasping at the edge of their jacket. Their face fully eclipsed due to the diagonal positioning of their body. A black chair and pink puppy purse are directly behind Estrellx, which function as core elements of their set design. A disco ball is sitting at the lower right hand corner of the image with visible audience members on the left side.]
