Workshop Description:
Throughout our lives, we consciously and unconsciously develop habits that may constrain and/or interfere with our ability to breathe and move easily (without clenching, tightening, holding the breath, or stiffening). During this workshop, we will explore principles of the Alexander Technique that will help us gain awareness of some of our habits and consequently enable our agency to make choices over them.
Participants will engage in locomotion exercises like walking, crawling, and other actions like sitting, bending, lying, spiraling, and developmental movement patterns. We’ll also spend some time on the floor practicing “active rest”. As part of my ongoing somatic research interest, we will explore the relationship between breath and sound and use the Alexander Technique tools to empower the vitality intrinsic in our bodies. This will support the use of our voices for public speaking, theater or voice acting, or just everyday communication.
This workshop integrates group observation, verbal guidance, non-intrusive tactile feedback, and anatomy diagrams.
All dance and movement backgrounds are welcome.
