Tere O’Connor will present research leading to his new work which will premiere in Fall 2025. In this presentation, he will delineate the pathway towards his understanding of formalism as a conceptual conceit and his efforts to circumvent “abstraction” to truly exploit the inimitable qualities of choreographic imagination. He will also discuss the influence that a severely closeted childhood exerted on the process methods he developed. Born of restrictions, calculations, instabilities and the subterranean emotional world of that reality, he will explore the structural underpinnings that shape his work and hold multiple meanings aloft in his ephemeral constellations. For his new project, as yet untitled, O’Connor will analyze methods originally forged in a naïve state of expression for his first work Construct-a-Guy. This presentation will help him clarify that analysis and apply these tools to the process of the new work. Segments of earlier dances, and excerpts of movement explorations for the new work will be shared.
