“I am interested in what we know about things through our bodies,” Simone Forti

This five afternoon workshop will honor the legacy and brilliance of dance innovator Simone Forti (1935 – 2026) through entering, studying and practicing her improvisational structures as process and performance. Simone’s structures, a vital blueprint of contemporary dance, arose from observing movements from everyday life and nature—nature as in landscape as well as the nature of the human body – movements from everyday life as well as spoken words and images in dance. As dancer/writer Wendy Perron wrote: “Simone Forti is an inventor of entering into forms. In her performances, the elements of movement, sound, and objects commingle into a new hybrid. Her art embodies both the conceptual strength of minimalism and the curiosity of exploratory improvisation, with her own sly wit thrown in to ensure a dose of radical juxtaposition. Forti’s great gift is simplicity—a divine, earthy simplicity that can touch onlookers to the core. She possesses an intuitive sense of what is artistically essential at each moment of performance…Her practice of improvisation…often combining dance and words, is part of her legacy. She aims not only to cross the barrier from dance to art, but from body to mind”

“Movement, or improvisation, always involves following impulses while also watching the whole situation… There is always thinking going on while the movement is happening….” (Simone Forti)
