This workshop will be in fluid dialogue with improvisational, compositional, choreographic, and visual art practices. Participants should possess a high threshold for personal, physical, and formal experimentation, and an openness towards connecting dance and object-making within the temporal realm and the wider world. Our time together will be informed by my experience with performing in spaces — galleries, lofts, clubs — typically carved out of larger structures, that were wildly varied in shape and size. The differing spaces required me to be adaptable, and they also brought to light the features of the performance itself: spatial proportions, audience positions, sound environments, and architectural features. I learned to approach my performances as temporary installations, in which drawings/mark making and sculptural forms, executed during the dance, served to situate myself and the audience within a mutable, embodied social space. Prior experience with interdisciplinary work need not be a concern.
What to expect:
Participants can expect to be led through a warm up and to explore a drawing exercise designed to spark connections between visual art and dance. I will supply all the materials. Participants will have time to work on their own and develop short solos to share with the class (duet and trio configurations are possible if desired).
