Spirals © Irene Dowd 1991 involves moving all the freely-moveable joints of our body, while exerting most of the muscles through their full possible range of motion between most elongated and most shortened. The entire body is moving with each action, and each action is performed in a different relationship with gravity and the performance space. This can serve as a way of “checking-in” to one’s physical state, practicing constantly changing coordination between different body parts, and attending to both inner spaces of one’s own body as well as the environment one is moving in. Movements are not repeated more than twice before moving onto the next action. This was one of the first long training choreographies for whole body that Irene created, and remains one of her favorites to practice and to teach.
What to expect:
The class will involve learning a full-body choreography created by Irene Dowd, much of it performed on the floor but some standing. A background in dance will be very helpful as one will more easily be able to perceive the details of the choreography and learn the sequence. Some degree of physical fitness is required for safety’s sake.
