EDITOR’S LETTER
One has only to look at an old tape of the original cast of Set and Reset to see Trisha Brown dancing at its best. Something so full-on, rigorously playful and sensual, yet classic that one resorts to calling it “sick.” And there it was back again, not unlike the sinnerman. It was as if one of Toni Morrison’s characters had slipped into town— all dressed in wit, innuendo, and slip sliding ooh-la-la. And despite the non-ideal performing conditions, amidst fab desserts and colleagues catching up at last spring’s festive Danspace Project gala, this Ms. Morrison named Leah brought something extraordinary to the church’s altar. Too often in the past and the not-so-recent past, the TBC dancers have been all too perfect in execution to resonate those forgiving lines and directions in space that make Madame Brown’s own dancing several lessons in love. With the summa cum alum Iréne Hultman as rehearsal director, that old sinking feeling is creeping back again and it’s alive in Leah Morrison, this issue’s centerfold. Check it out…
Special thanks to Paul Ben-Itzak, François Terrien, David Bergé, Myriam Van Imschoot, and Diana Raspoet for their help in bringing this issue to production.
All the best,
Trajal
