Sofia Engelman (she/they) is a Brooklyn-based dance artist and movement facilitator. Sofia is the creator of Queer Body Pilates, through which she hosts classes, continuing education workshops, apprenticeships, and private sessions centering queer and trans folks. They hold a BA with highest honors in Dance from Smith College and have studied Pilates through the Kane School, East River Pilates, Ellie Herman, The Neuro Studio, and more. You can find Sofia on podcasts, articles, and blogs by Balanced Body, Siobhan Burke, The New York Times, and Julia Granacki (among others) and in her upcoming book: Pilates for the Revolution. As a dance artist, Sofia has presented collaborative performance works with life & creative partner Em Papineau at spaces including FRESH Festival, The Kennedy Center, Mana Contemporary, EstroGenius Festival, Judson Church, School for Contemporary Dance & Thought, and CPR. Sofia’s performance credits include works by Kathleen Hermesdorf, Tyler Rai, Jennifer Polins, Alice Gosti, David Appel, and Michael Figueroa. Sofia was a co-creator of freeskewl (2020-2022), a platform for dance, discussion, education, and reparations, and is a former Editor at Contact Quarterly.
