Donovan Smith, a multidisciplinary artist based in Brooklyn, New York, draws inspiration from his background in Fashion and Textile Design to explore the body’s relationship with form, gesture, space, color, and memory. These concepts later inform his movement practice. Donovan is intrigued by his body’s natural movement patterns, which he often associates with percussion. This curiosity led him to learn, study, and incorporate various dance styles, such as House, Jazz, Capoeira, and Rumba, into a fluid and spontaneous dance form. Previously, Donovan performed in “Vis a Vis,” a series that focused on pure improvisation between musicians and dancers. Curated by Sjournee Cornelius Quaidoo in June 2025, “Vis a Vis” showcased the synergy between these two art forms. Currently, Donovan is developing a series of dances that continues his exploration of the liberation of the human spirit through sound and movement.
