I am an emerging titration of two key elements——the Jungwoong that’s a son of South Korea (with all the tastes, customs, inclinations and blood memories that implies), an embodiment of an Asian movement/sound aesthetic honed and steeped in martial arts practice, Korean Shamanism, and conscripted military service——and the Jungwoong that’s a 20-year resident of the United States and Philadelphia at a time of rising intolerance and cultural division, and breath-robbing gun violence; a still-wobbly English speaker; a practitioner of western contemporary dance and Contact Improvisation; and a professional dancer/choreographer at a time when the arts are both reeling from pandemic shutdowns and searching for new ways to serve and heal a hurting society. The ongoing and dynamic conversation, merger and clash between these elements shape who I am as a father, son, brother, choreographer, performing artist, teacher, lover, friend and world citizen.
