Judith Sánchez Ruiz is an internationally acclaimed choreographer,
educator, and cultural leader whose 34-year career spans five continents.
A graduate of Havana’s National School of Arts and a New York-based
artist since 1999, she has been commissioned and presented by
institutions including the Guggenheim Museum, Whitney Museum,
Danspace Project, The Joyce Theater, Storm King Art Center, and major
festivals and cultural institutions across Europe, Asia, and Latin America.
She made history as the first guest choreographer invited to create for the
Trisha Brown Dance Company in 53 years and has received support from
the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Baryshnikov Arts Center, and other leading
arts funders. After relocating to Europe in 2011 at the invitation of Sasha
Waltz and spending 14 years building an extensive international practice as
a choreographer, performer, educator, and creator of more than 50 works
and two original movement methodologies, Sánchez Ruiz returned to New
York in 2026 to found La Ceiba Arts Center in the Catskills. This new
chapter brings three decades of artistic innovation, international
relationships, and nonprofit leadership home to New York, with a vision to
create a vital multidisciplinary center where artists from diverse
backgrounds can research, create, connect, and build new cultural bridges
between New York and the world
