Constance Strickland is an interdisciplinary theatre artist, dramaturge, and founder of Theatre Roscius. Her practice fuses experimental movement, visual art, and physical playwriting to explore themes of identity, memory, and resilience. Rooted in storytelling through the body, her work delves into blood memories, mental health, and untold histories, with a focus on uplifting the inner emotional lives of women. Since 2013, Strickland has pioneered a distinct movement-based approach, creating transformative works such as This Grief Will Be of Use, mercy, HerSheMe, and An Antebellum Theory, which examine the intersections of femininity, labor, and ancestral narratives within patriarchal systems. Her hybrid performances combine visceral physicality with layered storytelling, bridging experimental movement and anthropological perspectives. Strickland’s work has been supported by the NEFA Artist Development Grant, the Los Angeles Cultural Trailblazer program, and The Getty Villa Theatre Lab. Her recent film projects, including Out of the Dark / Into the Light, premiered at the 59th Ann Arbor Film Festival, highlighting her commitment to innovation and authenticity across mediums. Strickland seeks to create spaces for reflection and healing, offering audiences immersive experiences that challenge hierarchy, archetypes, and center empathy. Her work embodies an enduring exploration of what it means to be human, pushing boundaries with intention and artistry.
