Alas Migrantes, as part of the Haus of Laur, was born out of the urgent need to provide a safe space for LGBTQ+ migrants within and beyond the ballroom scene. In the face of constant political attacks, we believe that creating spaces of safety, access, and collective sanctuary is essential. Our work introduces participants to the ballroom scene, emphasizing the significance of performance art, particularly in runway and performance categories. As a collective, we prioritize bridging language barriers within our queer migrant communities and aim to nurture creativity, authenticity, and self-love.

Felix (he/him) is a multidisciplinary artist and community organizer based in New York City. A first-generation Dominican-American from Washington Heights, Felix grew up navigating the tensions of immigrant life and queer identity. This upbringing has deeply shaped his creative practice, turned to art and queer community as tools of survival, liberation, and joy. In 2024, he founded The Haus of Luar, a cultural collective that uplifts and celebrates the queer Caribbean, Hispanic, and Afro-Latinx diaspora through performance, nightlife, and collaborative creation. His most reject project includes La Pajarería Mini Ball—the first Spanish-language mini ball in New York. His mission is to continue to create spaces where queerness, diaspora, and imagination collide—always blurring the line between the personal and the communal.

Luz is a Dominican-American artist from the Bronx. She began her formal training at the age of 12 in ballet, modern, jazz, and tap at the Bronx Dance Academy, with continued training at the Dance Theatre of Harlem from 2009–2012. At SUNY Purchase College, she studied performance art management while continuing to hone her technique and beginning to explore new styles, such as hip hop and streets stilettos. But it was in the years that followed college where she found her true practice and singular artistry when joining her first house within the vogue ballroom community; her place in the community was made official in 2018 when she debuted at her first ball, continuing to dance and compete in a variety of categories ever since. Luz has starred in campaigns for Be True Nike, Adidas, and Jeremy Scott, and appeared on Ryan Murphy’s Pose, season 1 & 2. You can catch her most recent television work on the 2022 season of Legendary, the HBO max hit voguing show, where she placed with a semi-finalist house in the final two competing teams.
