GPS Chats: Reports from the Field – Martita Abril & mayfield brooks

In this GPS Chats, NYC based artists Martita Abril and mayfield brooks will share “Reports from the Field” about their GPS residencies in East/Central Europe. mayfield brooks participated in a GPS residency in Poland in October 2024 in partnership with Kraków Choreographic Centre in Kraków and Polka Dot in Gdańsk. During their presentation, mayfield will share reflections on how artists in different contexts carve out space for themselves and their communities with and without institutions, as well as the importance of cross cultural global exchanges as incredible incubators for sharing and learning.

Martita Abril participated in a GPS residency in Hungary and Czech Republic in March 2025 in partnership with Workshop Foundation (Hungary) and Live Performance Bazaar (Czech Republic). In her presentation, Martita will discuss challenges faced by independent arts communities including funding limitations, decentralized networks, and the tension between artistic freedom and increasing governmental control as well as how artists are creating alternative platforms and festivals. Martita will also share about her experiences of crossing physical and metaphorical borders, and what it means to move freely—both as an artist and as a citizen.
