Please join us for the first GPS Chats presentation of 2025, “Solo and collective dancemaking practices in Czech Republic and Slovakia.” This in-person GPS Chats features GPS Residency artists Sabina Bočková from Czech Republic and Soňa Kúdeľová from Slovakia. Sabina and Soňa are in residence at Movement Research for three weeks during the 2025 Winter MELT workshop intensive from January 11-February 2, 2025 through the GPS/Global Practice Sharing program. Both artists will reflect on their individual and collective creative practices, transitions in their approach to dancemaking, and provide an overview of the arts and culture scene in their respective countries.

In her presentation Sabina Bočková will share about her background as a classically trained dancer who shifted her career path to that of an experimental artist, and how this process radically changed her view of the role of dance and dance artists in society. She will discuss her experiences with collaborative creation and leadership and give a brief overview of the functioning of the independent dance scene in the Czech Republic from the perspective of a choreographer and performer. She will also discuss her approach to adapting existing works to different contexts and the beauty of inviting people from different dance backgrounds into one’s own artistic journey.

Soňa Kúdeľová will discuss her creative practice as a choreographer and performer, through sharing ideas and working methods and practice from several project researches and creative processes she has conducted. She will share reflections from her recent experience of transitioning from solo to trio making and directing her focus more towards creative processes and environments than final production.

A reception will follow with drinks and light refreshments.

The GPS/Global Practice Sharing program is supported, in part, with generous support from the Trust for Mutual Understanding. The 2025 GPS/Global Practice Sharing Residency in NYC for Sabina Bočková received additional support from the Czech Center NY.
