Events

The Movement Research at the Judson Church gives local and international artists an opportunity to showcase performance work at any stage of development. This is a high visibility, low-tech forum on Monday nights happening throughout the fall and spring seasons.

A program of non-curated shared showings of experimentation and work-in-process, for artists at all stages of their development selected through a randomized lottery. The events are centered around a moderated discussion between the artists and audience providing an opportunity to experiment with different feedback methods to support and inform the artists’ process.

Movement Research Festivals explore contemporary dance forms through performances, classes, workshops, and discursive events. MR Festivals allow for a varied investigation and exploration into current artistic concerns and reflect Movement Research’s mission of valuing artists, their creative process, and their vital role within society.

Studies Project is an artist-practitioner organized series of panel discussions, participatory dialogues and community conversations that focus on provocative, timely issues of aesthetics and philosophy at the intersection of dance and social politics.

GPS Chats offers GPS artists and cultural producers an informal platform to discuss their work in the independent contemporary dance sector within their cultural contexts and the influence of international exchange on the development of their practices.

Movement Research partners with the Trisha Brown Dance Company to host weekly ongoing Company Class taught by a rotating cast of current and former company members including Cecily Campbell, Kimberly Fulmer, Leah Ives, Amanda Kmett'Pendry, Mariah Maloney, Kyle Marshall, Patrick McGrath, Lani Nahele, Wendy Perron, Jamie Scott, Shelley Senter, Vicky Shick, Stacy Spence, Abby Yaeger, and more. Over the course of these classes, instructors will guide dancers through movement practice and selected repertory excerpts from Trisha Brown's extensive body of work. Each teacher offers a unique focus and range of personal experience related to their understanding of Trisha’s choreographic sensibility, with the goal of empowering students in their artistic pursuits.

MR Publishing is made up of the print Movement Research Publishing Journal and digital Critical Correspondence.

Come investigate and experience ways that movement, sound, image, and performance can inform human culture. With multiple workshops each day, teaching artists who have just engaged in a 5-day International Interdisciplinary Artists Consortium (IIAC) Residency join with participants from around the world to create an embodied dialogue at the intersection of modalities—contemporary dance, improvisation, voice, sound, visual art, social rituals, walking practices, and more. Open to all backgrounds and experiences.

About Train and Create: Bates Dance Festival's 11th annual winter intensive in New York City is in partnership with Movement Research! Offering inspired dance training and creative exchange, this three-day intensive is designed for intermediate and advanced dancers.
