Workshop Description:
Contact Improvisation (C.I.), begun in 1972 by dancer Steve Paxton, celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. In the spirit of celebration, this 6 class workshop intensive will go deep into the basic principles of the form, offering students the opportunity to enter the original study of the physics and ecological forces two dancers experience as they move in relationship with each other through touch. As we resume proximity once again, and release restrictions on intimacy and closeness, we will also continue to evolve C.I. into current renderings of trust, balance, momentum, tone with qualities of mind/body/emotion of individual yet shared dance of multidimensional truths. This will be a very physical class open to all levels of experience. It will challenge assumptions about the form itself to rediscover the improvising within the contact of now as we also engage very specifically with the early techniques and disciplines. K.J. Holmes began studying and practicing Contact Improvisation in 1981. It is an essential part of her artistry, teaching and dance making.
