Workshop Description:

Began it's development in the mid 70's, as a journey from injury to healing, during a time when little information was available to help, heal, and provide options for dancers to increase longevity and self-knowledge. Although we are far away -50 almost years from that time, as a system and a firm set of principles, it still benefits all, dancers and not- dancers all, who engage them selves in the study of ones' body and movement. It is a system that increases fluidity and ease. What happens in class, in a short workshop situation can be as simple as learning to stretch safely, releasing unnecessary tension, but also as complex as expanding one's range of motion, increasing technical facility, and learning from and healing an injury. We work in class to deepen body awareness and body understanding. Our work increases creativity and expression. We connect to the earth through our legs, and stride into our life with purpose and confidence. In a workshop we address and work on, slowly, the basics, we work at the level of the bone, which is the simplest and deepest tissue/structure in the body, and we use its clarity, its density, and its energy to connect us to align our structure, connect to the earth for grounding and leverage and direct gravity/energy through our body by Engaging on this level allows us to drop in under the layers of muscle that hold us in set postural configurations which can limit our movement possibilities. It's not just about stretching or releasing, but the work focuses on deep connections of support through our skeleton. Freeing the legs and spine, connecting the pelvis to the legs, the upper body to the lower body, the feet to the ground, and the skull to the feet. We focus on grounded-ness by first learning to stand the pelvis on top of the legs to help us be truly upright, aligned to the forces of gravity. Building on this principle, we explore the deep muscles of postural support—the hamstrings (sitz bones to the heels), the external rotators, the psoas, and the tail to pubic bone/tail to heels. In daily class we address these principles in layers, building our foundation, interweaving theory, and practice. In a short week, we cannot work on everything, but we do start with the pelvis and go from there. This class is for all levels, all persons. Some level of movement/body awareness is helpful; simple anatomy will be explored.
