Workshop Description

This workshop welcomes people interested in vocalizing and resonance as ritual, to remember source and fall into the bliss of collective chanting.

Sound – in essence – precedes and follows manifestation. In that regard, emanating and shaping sound is a form of alchemy, bringing about the principles of vibration into matter, thus forming coherence in reality. As an artist I often approach teaching and performance as two sides of the same act of collective transformation. Teaching as a way to integrate the learning I find in creative processes, performing as a way to manifest the practices I’ve developed into a collective experience. I find these two folds completing each other, and I’d like to offer a space that weaves both in the context of a creative endeavor I am calling Before before & After after, or B.A.BA (French for indicating the basics of something), that will become a performance taking place at Brooklyn venue Jack, on June 3rd and 4th. Invoking collective chanting as a baseline for studying intention, manifestation, and dissolution, I will propose ways to sing that are feeding this inquiry. Participants will be invited to vocalize as an elementary, essential practice of intentionality and surrender to archetypal subconscious patterns that connect our bodies to forms of knowledge that exceed what we commonly accept as existence and non-existence. Embodiment, energetics, prosody, cyclical rhythm, and oral transmission will provide structure to our experiments, both with rigor and freedom, and some original material from the piece about-to-be will be offered to play with.
