About this workshop:
Imagining Liberation Part 2 - A Conversation, A Game, A Study, A Process, A Meeting, An approach to Making Dances. Prayerfully, an approach to "Shaping Future".
"Africans leaping off slaver ships were afrofuturists. Slave era parents teaching their babies a foreign alphabet in the candlelit dirt were afrofuturists... It is the emphasis on tomorrow that centers the dignity of that seed, particularly in the face of extinction..." - Adrienne Marie Brown/ Emergent Strategy. Can we Imagine our liberation into existence- with our dance making?!
5 Days. 2 hrs max. Imagining Liberation began as a pilot gathering during MELT (2019). But also.... here we are, again. Re-living the traumas of our history, like a bad dream that won't end. Witnessing and living injustices on every front, in every sector, and in every system and institution we interact with. What can be made new in such dire and overwhelming circumstances? Aaaaah... "The Role of the Artist" (James Baldwin) to pull all together the fragmented pieces of our lineages, our sustenance, and our dreams to imagine paths forward. After the protests end, the pandemic subsides, the institutions/applications/stages re-open, what kind of stories will you be telling? What kind of art will you make? What might it reveal about where we come from, and who we are becoming? Join me, let's make some blueprints together.
