In this class we explore the classic principles of the Alexander Technique in a manner both transparent and transcendental. How do we decide how to move? What are our intentions?
In the beginning of class, we cover the basics in a manner that is absolutely simple – “What are the AT directions? How do I ‘inhibit?’ What does it mean to be aware?” We do this in order to see for ourselves what they are and what effect they have. We then apply those principles in a wholly unique way. Through a guided movement mediation, we take the time we need to slowly explore our movement options, to process and embody new ideas, and to let those intentions create movement. Is what I’m doing interesting? Does it feel good? Is it fun? With the Alexander principles as guidelines, we follow our interests and intuition, let go of our expectations and allow something new to happen! Healthy and easeful movement patterns emerge. Class concludes with individual hands-on and partner work.
What to expect:
This class is opened to all level of movers and has no requirements, other than to have an open mind. We will do a lot of movement improvisation although it is purely for the purpose of self-exploration, and should not cause anxiety. The guided meditation starts lying on the floor, and we slowly begin moving, so be prepared to lie on the floor.
