Mystical Somatics: A Practice of Presence Between Worlds
As a queer, trans, dance artist and death doula living with invisible disabilities, there are many reasons I feel liminal spaces can be avenues toward healing. Recently I’ve been developing a movement practice exploring complex fields of consciousness by intertwining the material with the immaterial. For this Process Lab, participants will tap into various trance states and generate movement through guided meditation, intuitive knowing, Tarot imagery, ritual and games that create cognitive dissonance. Together we’ll exist deeply within and radically outside of our bodies.

Body Scripting Workshop
Tamar Rogoff and Gregg Mozgala offer a Movement Research Workshop in partnership with the Dance on Camera Festival co-presented by Dance Films Association and the Film Society of Lincoln Center, coinciding with the screening of the documentary, Enter The Faun. The film, directed by Tamar and Daisy Wright, shows how as a choreographer Tamar trained Gregg, an actor with Cerebral Palsy, to become a dancer. They will demonstrate the experiential methods used to transform Gregg's body. Sitting on chairs or standing and moving through the room, participants are guided into experiencing new and surprising places in their own body from which to move. Whether it's the feel of the cheek bones or being led to the sternum, or tailbone, the participants explorations take them far from their habitual patterns to discover a freedom in movement that they might not have known they had. This 2 hour workshop is open to all, from dancers to physical therapists, from people with disabilities to neurologists. No movement training necessary.

Voice as Movement
This lab is intended for anyone interested in exploring or using voice in performance. Drawing focus to breath through awareness and a basic physical warm-up, we will move into an anatomy-based approach to producing sound. Various exercises for cultivating stamina, resonance, range, volume, and articulation will be introduced. We will explore how the extension of movement into sound can alter our perception and activate space differently than movement alone. Further, we will experience a dialogue between spoken language and movement. Finally, we will discover how this interplay can expand the variety of choices that are available to performers, allowing for a fuller means of expression through the body. Registration available in person at the start of the lab.

Destroy// Laboratory
This is a lab for somatic and conceptual inquiry based on Leyya Mona Tawil’s research-performance project Destroy// All Places. After preparing the psyche and body, we will journey through a series of solo-form experiments. This work is built on manipulations of the nervous system, using a physical approach to gaming the ego. Our destroy mechanisms depend on intention, and the promise of durational activities. The work we attempt will be self-monitored and -motivated. Registration available in person at the start of the lab.

Touch: A feel for feeling one’s body through and with others (IDD Workshop)
We will explore the body, movement and the space we’re in through touch. Hands on, feet on, center on, head on, back on, legs on… in duo, trio and group constellations. We will dance in close proximity and with some distance too, working with the physical matter of the body as well as extended notions of ‘touch'. Touching and being touched. Feeling one's body through others, a feel for feeling others feeling you. We will work with lifts and partnering to feel one’s body through other bodies as we invite sounds, smells, images, memories and fictions to touch us. As we are touched, we will touch back, invoking fictions of mythical goddesses, personal idols, historical creatures, shared ancestors and the spirits of nature. Dancers, witches, wizards, fairies, shamans, poets, creatures, pirates, subalterns and radicals, all welcome. ///// PART OF: Janet Panetta's International Dance Dialogues.

Dance In Frame (Workshop)
This is a workshop about "why, when and how" to convey a choreographic idea into video. Through hands-on exercises, we’ll explore tools available in this medium, like framing, camera movement, deconstruction of space and time. Are those tools essential to translate your idea, and is the video the best medium for your concept? These are some questions we will be examining in this workshop.

the prepared body (Workshop)
The body is capable of so much more than what it can do. For example, sound coming from the piano was more or less constant until John Cage created the prepared piano by introducing different objects into its’ body. These components altered the piano’s harmonics. Similarly, questions will be applied to our bodies to alter the harmonics of movement through choreography.

This lab will begin with gentle floor work based on the Feldenkrais Method®. It will be followed by a slow movement exploration affording each individual the opportunity to listen to what is within themselves and to discover their own innate movements. From there we will explore movement phrasing based on my own improvisations. Adding music, I will encourage the participants to create their own crazy characters by decomposing the phrase given and experimenting with discovering their own dance in the space.

Deeply Located, Fiercely Liberated
In Deeply Located, Fiercely Liberated, participants will inhabit the atmospheric conditions used to create my latest works, Fear in Porcelain and Sister to a Fiend. In this workshop we will create and destroy physical forms as well as assumptions about meaning, forms, formlessness, beauty, value systems, risk, and utility/futility. Through improvising, observing, writing and talking, we will engage in a variety of energetic transfers that encourage total absorption and liberation in dance practice. Registration available in person at the start of the lab.

FESTIVAL Healing Day Workshop: Rename and Unbody
Full title: [Rename and Unbody: Somatic Awareness and Language for Who and What We Are.] This workshop is for those who seek to find a space and a language for a self that is not "fixed" - i.e. constrained to norms of identity such as gender or ability. How can we establish terms for our many selves that live more closely to our experience? We will queer such somatic practices as Skinner Releasing, Body-Mind Centering®, and Authentic Movement to come up with our own language for what our materiality means to us (as bodies, organs, substances, and/or everything in between).

FESTIVAL Healing Day Workshop: Reconnect Somatic Therapy
This workshop uses meditation, movement, contact and dialogue in a one-on-one individual session. This work emphasizes the importance of bringing our attention to what’s happening now, specifically in our bodies. As a facilitator, I am there to shepherd your questions and curiosity back to your self, trusting the wisdom that surfaces as yours to hear. The lessons that are embedded in our tissue, our muscles, bones and organs, breath and heartbeat can only be heard if we take time and make space to listen to them. Four 30-minute individual sessions will be offered.

FESTIVAL Healing Day Workshop: Being a Body Out Loud
Full title: [Being a Body Out Loud: Trans-Indigenous and Political Practices for Artists and Activists seeking radical moves in their work, art, lives] This physical practice is grounded in indigenous healing intelligences and African Diasporic performance aesthetics, designed to catalyze your activist, performance, and creative practices through rigorous improvisational excavations. We will create space to reveal and dismantle, where necessary, the silences, memories, ancestral knowledges, tyrannies, that are held in the body and engage how the rigors of engaging politics, social justice, and freedom in our art/activist-making can be mirrored in a commitment to radical self-care. Open to all people and artists. Trans, Queer, and Gender Non-Conforming Artists of Color encouraged. Participants should bring a notebook. #bonespeak #staywoke

FESTIVAL Healing Day Workshop: Witchcraft
Full title: [Witchcraft: A Corporeal Practice] Several years ago I began experiencing changes in my health and body that shifted the ways I approach dance and daily life. Without concrete answers from doctors or various bodyworkers, I began looking to witchcraft and earth-based rituals as somatic practices of integration, acceptance and healing. I’ve also been thinking a lot about how all bodies - whether elderly, disabled, or otherwise "different" - can enter into dance. For this workshop, we will look to astrology and the lunar calendar, as well as our own unique and defiant bodies, to generate restorative movement. Come with an awareness of something you might like to shed, heal and/or embrace. This workshop is for anyone interested in connecting to their bodies. There will be time to improvise and make movement, but mostly I want to make sure folks get whatever they want out of this workshop. If dancing or improvising feels intimidating/not right in the moment, participants can engage in other equally valid ways (i.e.: through writing, drawing, observing etc). Generally, I will encourage everyone to take part in a group improvisation/movement practice (simply because I think feeling our bodies in motion is so important), but this can manifest in multiple ways and it's totally at your discretion. Overall, the goal during this workshop is to tune into our bodies in whatever ways feel good to us as individuals. On June 9th the Sun will be in Gemini and the Waxing Moon will be in Leo. We will explore themes that are in alignment with these transits such as communication, will, ego, being in relationship, and finding balance between the head and the heart. We’ll also focus our healing energy on Gemini and Leo ruled body parts such as the hands, lungs, and nervous system (Gemini), and the heart, thoracic spine, spleen and aorta (Leo).

FESTIVAL Healing Day Workshop: Healing an Icon?
Full title: [Healing an Icon? Performance/Talk/Open Dialogue] In this gathering, performance is placed within the context of the Festival’s Healing Day. The event takes place in the intimacy of the dance studio in order to take a deeper look at the public act of performing. There will be a performance, a talk and then an open dialogue with the participants. This time is not meant to be therapeutic nor healing, but rather an opportunity to engage with the possibility and failure of performance as an agent of relationship between our internal and external realms, of aesthetic as a means to dissolve the diagnosis, of communal sensation within personal projection. If every symptom of our body-mind is perceived as human phenomenon free from external value, what can Healing learn from performance practice?

FESTIVAL Healing Day Workshop: Rupture
Full title: [Rupture: Improvising In the Break] We practice performance training rooted in inquiry where we rigorously apply transgressive politics and physically embodied ruptures to sustain movement practice. We interrupt our own improvised dances. There is a rhythm that the dancer finds, creates and destroys. We improvise in a break or a stillness that carries rhythm. We touch space, time and each other. We ask questions: How does one negotiate rupture in a dance, song or story? How do we creatively intervene in what’s expected? Where does this intervention begin and end or does it have an ending?

PRESENT TENSE / FUTURE PERFECT
Through a handful of practice-based choreographic scores, will work on how to get out of the way of our own dancing, allowing ourselves to be the medium for a dance to appear, rather than having dance be a medium for ourselves to appear. Taking the idea of medium one step further, we will also work on the invisible things that dance makes visible. Performing and reading dances for their predictive and oracular potentials. Exercising a breadth of technical, artistic, expressive, observational, descriptive and performance skills, we work towards activating our embodied knowledge in a way that is synthetic and intuitive, and towards sharpening the accuracy of our observation towards a more intimate understanding of what is happening when we dance and the meanings it creates. PRESENT TENSE / FUTURE PERFECT is about using everything we know and don't yet know to construct and maintain a horizon of continuously unfolding potential for movement, its actualisation, and meanings.
