We will take the time to investigate different states of physical awareness by using a three-fold structure. We will begin with a guided improvisation to observe the body and its natural movements through awareness of breath, weight, tension and release, taking time to notice the body’s qualitative presence moment-by-moment. We will follow by dancing within technical forms to support our range and work as dancers. We will conclude with a phrase that integrates concepts of weight, lightness, initiation and intention. The merging of the unconscious life of movement through observation and improvisation and the conscious attention to physical direction is part of the energizing practice we will explore in each class.

Technique / EXERCISES IN COMPOSITION
This class is designed to access multiple threads at once, such as greater range of motion and articulation, isolated and momentum-driven movement forms, rhythmic and kinesthetic intelligence, sense of scale, ascent and descent, injury prevention, and dancing that supports a balanced square orientation over a vertical axis, aligning heels/feet, pelvic floor, shoulders and skull while traversing through space in a mode that reflects a play between neutrality and shifting off center, a particular disposition. This class will foster a thorough understanding of the body as an expressive and resourceful vehicle.

This movement class will develop from simple skeletal mobility sequences to full-out movement forms. Emphasis will be placed on your joints, examining how their range of motion relates to alignment, support, weight, pathway and qualitative detail in the course of movement. We will consider the inherent lines in the body's anatomy as the basis for movement material in a full range, from neutral to provocative.

Class begins with explorations of the body that allow us to discover and notice the use of weight and momentum, clear alignment, clarity of initiation, and direction of energy. These concepts will allow for experiencing ourselves in open and dynamic dancing. From there the class will build upon itself into more complex coordinations as we move through learning material and moving through space.

Using the morning technique class structure as a model, this class will focus on dance as a physical, conceptual and experiential practice, with an emphasis on the cultivation of presence inside of the forms. Class will begin with imagery and gentle preparation adapted from varied somatic practices, such Qi Gong and Alexander Technique, and will expand into technical exercises, choreographic structures, improvisations and performance constructs, exploring ways to engage with the material through precise and imaginative means.

This class seeks to prepare an articulate, alert and neutral body, ready for precise dancing with intricate co-ordinations that we will work on together. There is a simple, straightforward, continuous warm-up that relies on the use of release, alignment, momentum, weight and strength. Clarity, simplicity of movement, attention to detail and concentration will be our goal.

This morning class starts with a Feldenkrais Method approach: the floor work consists of gentle, yet active, explorations of self-perception, identifying habitual and alternative patterns of movement . Then we will do a simple warm up in standing with transitions in and out the floor. The work material plays with multidirectional, voluminous dancing, sensing potential pathways and manifesting through them with deliberate and spontaneous action.

Using improvisational and set warm-ups we will focus on the volume and weight inside the body and its relationship to the floor. Exercises that bring awareness to the sternum and pelvic floor encourage the feeling of release in the limbs from those places of support, allowing us to fall and suspend off-center. Using these physical tools inside technical patterns and phrase material, we will work towards a more grounded and direct approach to movement.

We will start with touch to facilitate awareness of internal and external space and as a means of warming up our sensed communication capacities. From there we will work in duet forms that activate the dynamic presence of space. This will lead to solo practices built from the process of touching, dancing together and listening with each other. We will work with sensory and conceptual space, activating physical imagination through energetic modes of moving and communicating with each other.

Beauty, awkwardness, form, strength, weakness. Intended to be both laboratory and class, we will delve into the design of the body and its potential within a given moment. Through open practices, stretch and placement, technique studies, and movement phrases, habits will be discovered, challenged and seen through a new lens. A concentration on the forces through the legs will lead to finding the range in separate body parts and ways to use your weight into the floor. My hope is for you to feel present and challenged and to leave class with a few answers and many more questions.

A Re-Education – Klein Technique as Taught by Barbara Mahler
This ongoing class is grounded in the explorations and studies of the body, at rest and in motion. It is an approach to movement re-education which has been in development since 1972. Class provides the technical and conceptual underpinnings to support all styles of movement and aesthetic viewpoints. The purpose of class is to re-educate one's body with an interweaving of theory and practice on a physical, experiential and organic level. The result is clarity, sureness of movement and a new level of understanding the innate intelligence of one’s body. In order to move most efficiently, it is necessary to let go of the muscles that fix the body into a set and locked configuration and hold us back from moving. When the bones are aligned, we become connected and powerful, efficient and strong. The aim is also to lessen the possibility of injury by bringing a deep knowing of one’s body into their moving practice. The class is open to all levels, dancers and non-dancers alike.

Alexander Technique
Emergent Learning The Alexander Technique is an emergent learning process that uses tools of observation and re-patterning to prevent injury, resolve chronic pain, and facilitate an expanded movement potential and freedom. In these four classes, we will use a variety of methods to explore adaptive, self-organizing ways of learning and connecting. We will engage in a cyclic process that develops through these five principles: articulating interests, gathering information, recognizing patterns that emerge, selecting what is useful, and re-assimilating this information back into an emergent whole.

The Athletics of Intimacy, Improvisations
Classes combine skills and practices of Contact Improvisation, applications of Body-Mind Centering® and tutoring of somatic improvisational approaches in solo, duet (strong emphasis on partnering) and ensemble dancing. I am interested in the very physical, the very sensorial and the very imaginative, and in discovering new challenges and risks within our movement.

Contact Improvisation is a partnering dance form. Skills such as rolling, releasing, giving and supporting weight, expanding range of spatial concentration, lifting, catching and falling help one move with and through gravity, share weight in motion and use momentum and flow in physical contact. These weekly classes, open to people of all levels of movement experience, are informed variously by the individual artist faculty.

Irene will teach selections of the material choreographed in response to her interaction with professional dancers and dance teachers since 1990 as well as new material she is creating now. These choreographies can be used as very efficient warm-ups for dance as well as a musculo-skeletal conditioning program, neuro-muscular fine-tuning, and mental preparation for the greater awareness and expansiveness required of us all as creative performing artists.

Enormous Eyes: sculpting dance in real time
Class begins with a brief idiosyncratic warm up and sharing our own personal sense of readiness. Then a guided preparation, deeply rooted in Skinner Releasing Techniqueâ„¢ alignment principles, allows us to embody directional releasing and autonomy of the breath. SRT is a movement-based and imagery-based process of discovery. We explore the suppleness of the self and others. Later, as movement constructs are introduced, we are encouraged to apply various Sculpting Tools and Hidden Agendas so as to morph our ever-shifting spatial relationships in real time. By nurturing alternative modes of perception, we transform a seemingly chaotic environment into a spontaneously choreographed situation based on myriad formal and aesthetic possibilities.

Alexander Technique
Alexander Technique looks at the way we carry out our intentions. Often we use a process that is habitual, unconscious and counterproductive. The technique offers a practice of staying open and alert in the moment, observing our familiar tensions and choosing to move without them. Beginning with the assumption that we are perfectly designed for movement and balance, we engage our mind to undo layers of interference, creating opportunity for change.

Open Movement Practice
This open level movement class draws from elements of social, folk, and contemporary dance forms, as well as from ordinary action. Resisting the urge to transform ourselves into blank slates, we will abandon the term ‘neutral’ and uncover our bodies’ inherent knowledge and history. By using sensorial, perceptual, anatomical, spatial and imaginative pathways, we’ll amplify, morph and direct our individual movement patterning. We will play with technical structures, improvisational concepts, choreographic frameworks and performing. Class will allow us to continuously activate our bodies through space, while discovering the kinesthetic sensitivity of a dynamic body-in-motion.

PROSODIC BODY Workshop: Choreoprosodia (the fusion of movement and prosody)
These six workshops focus on the sonic properties of language exploring the correspondences between energy centers, hormonal secretion, seed movements, sonic harmony, and emotional and neurological impact. Spending time with each of the different phoneme-harmonic-compositions developed for the Phoneme Choir, we will use a 'scientific methodology' to differentiate and name how each affects individuals and inform us of their healing and performative properties. This workshop only occurs Sept 18, Oct 16, Nov 20, Dec 18, Jan 15 and Feb 19

Writing Dance
Choreographer Jonathan Burrows leads a three day workshop investigating choreographic and compositional process, performance and philosophies, questioning how a dance or performance might be made and what it could communicate to somebody watching. Practical work will concentrate on short task-based exercises looking at how to define material and work with time, to hold the attention of an audience and invite them to care what happens next. Sessions will be punctuated also with discussion and viewpoints on other mediums and ways of working, asking all the time what dance can do and what it can't.

The Lost, The Found and The Fantasy: Urban Meditation
Through an interdisciplinary approach, participants will work with excavating found images, phrases overheard on the bus, movement studies from the street and found sounds and texts to develop their own response to the city and its current dialogue with us. These found materials are things that pulled you towards them, attracted your attention, even if you are not completely sure why. From this fieldwork material, participants will work in the studio with further writing, movement and installation experiments to explore re-enlivening our city-life. Informal, “instant†showings link what has been found with a larger vision of what could be possible. Participants are asked to come to the studio with a scrap of conversation overheard publicly, a picture of a specific place or person in the city, a gesture or series of gestures that they observed in their everyday walks, a torn piece of text found on the street.

WHAT IS THIS CLASS
Old school technique class with new school questions. This is a warm-up for being a contemporary dance artist whatever that means. Real techniques, invented techniques, practicing presence, practicing hope, “releasing,†sweating, thinking, feeling, moving for no reason and finding out how. Exercises are boring but sometimes important. Phrases are patriarchal but sometimes fun. Smart movers make good art. I am the teacher, and I will do what I can.

THREE DAYS IN SPACE
A workshop considering and practicing the essential nature of the space in which choreography and dance can be made and performed. Based in his experience as a performer and dance-maker, Julyen Hamilton's pedagogic work deals with the details of subjects such as time, space and dramaturgy and how it concerns both pre-set and immediate composition. Hamilton's ability to distill and convey essential principles allows dancers and performers from a wide range of backgrounds to engage in his methodology. His classes naturally enter the worlds of physiology, philosophy, culture, imagination and the future.

I AM ONE WHO
Developed during the past 21 years by Raïna von Waldenburg and based on the physical acting training of Jerzy Grotowski and Stephen Wangh (An Acrobat of the Heart), this innovative approach to performance forces the performer to live inside of the moment with barefaced sincerity. In a series of presence exercises that require the performer to exist in the (power of) now, he/she is faced with judges, habits, blocks, quirks, and talents that he/she has pushed aside. By literally inviting these "undesirable" parts of him/herself into the work, the performer suddenly has access to impulses that are utterly alive, surprisingly truthful, and emotionally resonant. The performer learns to channel these impulses into performance that is open, creative, and precise. This class fosters an ensemble-based environment where actors learn to develop constructive vocabulary for giving and receiving critical feedback, and where peers are vital to the learning process. This is a non-linear approach to performance training. You are welcome to take ONE or BOTH workshops. Please come to class prepared with: loose, comfortable clothing; a water bottle; and a fully memorized/choreographed one-minute formal container (monologue, song, movement piece, poem, original material, etc.) to use for application.

ANATOMY OF PRESENCE
What is presence? How do we awaken presence in the body? How can we cultivate this intangible quality that draws people in and leaves an image burning in the mind? In this workshop we will learn to contact the energetic source of your creativity and cultivate inner presence. Develop an intuitive awakened body, by exploring practices drawn from Butoh, Indian Odissi Dance, Suzuki Method, and Yoga. Rest in the stillness, the emptiness, and that born in emptiness. Drink from the well of primordial presence, radiance, and shadow. Invite the dance to reflect the shifting inner landscape of your being.

We will practice using tools for noticing a more enlarged perspective of ourselves while dancing. Tools for Dance Improvisation
Every joint of our body has its range of movement, there are countless possible combinations. The body contains a great practical knowledge far beyond what the mind is capable of processing, resulting in an ever-changing, fluid sense of orientation that can serve as a sensor for potential movement. Through (group) improvisation with one or more partners, exchanging information through touch, we will take advantage of this phenomenon to create forms, rhythms, movement qualities more sophisticated than our minds could invent.
