MRPJ #21/Age and the Trajectory of the Body in Time: “Age-ism” by Cathy Weis

FALL/WINTER 2000

I saw Pina Bausch at BAM same old but the house loved it so who am I to disagree but I think performing is discriminatory because after a certain age who has the energy? And those that do wouldn’t be stupid enough to just throw that energy away. You know that glow from the energy of a 18 year old, they all have it, we all had it, and it leaves after, let’s say in general, I mean not counting unusual crises that would age anybody but crises are so subjective really like pain would you call this pain or what and maybe my crises is something you take in stride although I doubt it because I’ve been meted out a few wallybolousas and baby let me tell you I’m still here with all my bow ties strung up and the quiver ready to fray into the deep blue skies. Hah. I talk big. Right. And the power of… well take the dentist… that reduces me. My technique is making my body feel sensations elsewhere that eclipse the teeth nerves. Drawing blood with my fingernails with the sharks circling me. Ha. That’s nothing. Moby’s Dick indeed.
