Spirals © Irene Dowd 1991 involves moving all the freely-moveable joints of our body, while exerting most of the muscles through their full possible range of motion between most elongated and most shortened. The entire body is moving with each action, and each action is performed in a different relationship with gravity and the performance space. This can serve as a way of “checking-in” to one’s physical state, practicing constantly changing coordination between different body parts, and attending to both inner spaces of one’s own body as well as the environment one is moving in. Movements are not repeated more than twice before moving onto the next action. This was the first training choreography for whole body that Irene created, and remains one of her favorites to practice and to teach.
Background in dance is helpful, since the choreography is detailed and complex and takes 3-5min to perform on each side.
