The Contact Improvisation Jam is an opportunity to practice CI in a space of mutual respect, trust and shared curiosity. This tribute jam will begin with the Stand, an early practice of Contact Improvisation, to honor Steve Paxton and his great contribution to the inception and development of CI. It will continue into open dancing with a led, shared warm down towards the end of the jam.
Proceeds from the jam will go towards the new resource room at Movement Research named in honor of Steve Paxton, Lisa Nelson and Nancy Stark Smith.
Preceding this jam will be a class, “What is my body doing when I am not conscious of it,” taught by K.J. Holmes from 10:30am-1pm. Participants can do either or both, but must attend each from beginning to end.
Participants must register for the class separately from this jam. Register for the class by following the link below.
This jam (and preceding class) follows a special evening at Danspace Project, Steve Paxton – a video amble organized and hosted by Lisa Nelson and Cathy Weis – Friday February 14th, 6:30 p.m. The video is a selection of excerpts of rarely seen performance documents and video snapshots from his life at the Farm in Vermont. Interspersed with conversation, this viewing will give but a glimpse of the breadth of how, in Steve’s words, “dance is the art of taking place.”
