Amanda Loulaki was born in Iraklion, Crete. In 1990 she received a BA in Education from the Department of Pedagogy in Crete and in 2007 she received her MFA in Dance from Hollins University in USA.
In 1994 Amanda was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to study at the Merce Cunningham Dance Studio and moved to New York. Amanda Loulaki and Short Mean Lady, a project oriented company was formed in 2001. The focus of her choreography is in the “process of making,” and researching the creative process in terms of imagination and relationship to the physical and emotional state. Amanda’s choreography has been presented at Danspace Project at St Mark’s Church, La MaMa, Pentacle, Dixon Place, PS 122, Joyce Soho (Dancenowfest), Dance New Amsterdam, The Kitchen, Dance Theater Workshop, 11thBiennale of young artists of Europe and the Mediterranean (Athens) BucharEast.West International Dance Festival (Bucharest), the Mediterranean Contemporary Dance Platform (Hania-Greece), American Dance Festival Massachusetts Institution of Technology (MIT), the Choreographic Center Archauz (Denmark), and ZVRK Festival (B&H). Amanda was one of the choreographers selected for The Barnard Project in 2007 at Dance Theater Workshop and was appointed an adjunct Associate Professor at Barnard College of Columbia University during the 2007 fall semester. Amanda has taught at the American Dance Festival, Massachusetts Institution of Technology (MIT), Dance New Amsterdam and the New Jersey Institution of Technology.
Amanda Loulaki has received support from: the Bessie Schonberg/First Light commissioning program of New York’s Dance Theater Workshop, with funds from the Jerome Foundation of St Paul, MN, and The Kitchen’s Dance-in-Progress Series, Jerome Foundation and Danspace Project, the Manhattan Community Arts Fund, supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and administered by the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Hollins University, the Trust for Mutual Understanding and has been a Movement Research Artist in Residence (2001-2002).
Since 1998, Amanda has been the Programming Director at Movement Research, and has programmed the Improvisation Festival/NY. Amanda has also served on panels for Movement Research at the Judson Church, Danspace Project at Saint Mark’s Church (Food for Thought), P.S. 1 Museum of Modern art (Warm Up Series) , Fresh Tracks (Dance Theater Workshop and LMCC (Lower Manhattan Cultural Council). As a strong advocate of experimentation in dance, Amanda Loulaki has been invited to attend conferences and platforms such as, IDEE conference (Initiatives in Dance Through European Exchange), 3rd and 4th Balkan Dance Platforms, The British Dance Edition, and DunaPart, Hungarian Dance Platform. Amanda is a member of IETM (International Network For Contemporary Art).
