The Intern Program enables 25-30 artists annually to learn valuable administrative skills, assist MR staff, and attend workshops and classes for free.
Movement Research offers the following Internship opportunities for dancers of all levels ages 18 and up. Applications are reviewed periodically, either with each new season, or as a position becomes available. Applications are welcome at any time. Please note for which positions you are applying. The resume should focus on work experience and include all relevant computer skills, technological experience, finance/cash register experience, and whatever else you feel is applicable to your areas of interest.
Class Registration and Studio Internships
6 month (fall or spring season) minimum time commitment
10 hours per week in exchange for free classes, some free workshops, at least one week of MELT intensive
Duties include: class registration, studio maintenance and cleaning, serving as a liaison between the studio and the off-site offices, and occasionally assisting with office duties and events
Production Internships
6 month (fall or spring season) minimum time commitment
An average of 10 hours per week in free classes, some free workshops, at least one MELT workshop. Duties include: set-up, door, and technical assistance for Movement Research at the Judson Church, Open Performance, Studies Project, Movement Research Festivals, and Gala.
Office Internships
Minimum commitment varies, but is generally 6 months for NY residents and case by case basis for international students, 10 - 15 hours per week, depending on the duration of the Internship, in exchange for free classes, some free workshops, at least one MELT workshop. Please note that we are unable to assist with visas in any way and do not qualify to sponsor a visa.
Office internship areas of focus include:
The Operations Intern works closely with the Operations Manager on the day-to-day matters of the business including; assisting in bookkeeping, tracking intern hours, contract preparation and distribution to MR faculty and artists, database entry and light facilities maintenance.
Development:
The Development Intern assists the Development Manager with tasks that vary by season (including support for grant deadlines, end-of-year giving, gala, Artist Advisory Council and Board) and is responsible for entering donations into the database, assisting with program tracking, taking minutes at various meetings and grant/artist opportunity research. Additionally, the ideal candidate possesses a strong interest in engaging contemporary and experimental dance and/or performance work through language. Experience with Mac software, Word, Excel and Filemaker strongly encouraged.
The Media Intern assists the Media and Communications Manager with the video archive and database, press and promotional materials, website maintenance and social media. The ideal candidate possesses a strong work ethic, basic organizational skills, and an interest in the documentation of contemporary and experimental dance. Experience with Mac software and Excel are strongly encouraged. Experience with Dreamweaver, iMovie, and/or social media platforms a plus.
The Programming Intern works closely with the Programs and Events Coordinator to organize many of the artist programs and events including, but not limited to: the annual Spring Gala, MELT Workshops, Fall and Spring Workshops, and our application based programs. Candidates should have experience with Microsoft Excel and Word, excellent writing skills, strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work in a small, busy office environment. Knowledge of Filemaker Pro, Mac Mail program, and Google Docs not required but helpful.
The Spring Festival 2015 Intern works closely with the Spring Festival curatorial team, the Director of Artist's Programs and Program and Events Coordinator. Time commitment is 10-15 hours a week beginning in February and working through the end of May. Festival takes place May 11-18 at multiple venues. Intern should have good organizational and email communication skills, an attention to detail, and some familiarity with google docs and with setting up and working on spreadsheets. Intern will be compensated with free admittance to festival events in addition to some free classes with Movement Research during the term of their internship.
Summer and Winter Office Internships (Please note that this is an Office Internship. Summer and Winter Interns get to take at least one MELT workshop, not the entire MELT intensive.)
Geared to college students and recent graduates seeking to connect to our unique community and gain professional skills, Summer Internships are minimum 2 month commitment, and can begin as early as mid-May and conclude mid-August. Winter Internships are a minimum 1 month commitment, begin the first full week of January, and conclude between the last week of January and the end of February.
15 - 25 hours per week, depending on availability and college credit requirements (where applicable). All interns interact with all staff members, but areas of focus are: Operations (finance, overall organization & management); Marketing/Media (press and promotional materials, eblasts, mailings and brochure/material distribution, social media); and Archives (video and print archival work and maintenance).
Summer and Winter Interns receive access to free classes and the ability to take at least one MELT workshop.
Performance Journal (Next call for applications: May 2014)
Internships are approximately 5-10 hours / week. Hours will be distributed unevenly depending on the production schedule for the publication and any pressing needs that emerge with each issue. The internship term is for two issues, PJ45 and PJ46--commencing in July 2014 and completing at the end of May 2015. During that time, the intern will receive free Movement Research classes and some workshops.
Journal internship tasks:
-Assist with research and information gathering to support writers and editors (for instance literature reviews)
-Write brief listing-format pieces
-Help collect writer bylines
-Collect event dates
& details for the Featured Artists Calendar
-Transcribe/edit interviews
-Participate in editorial meetings
-Deliver interview recorders from the Movement Research office to interviewers
-Download audio files from recorders
-Assist with outreach and distribution
-Assist with copyediting
The ideal candidate will have the following:

The internship is largely self-directed, and the intern will most often work from home, aside from meetings. It is an opportunity to gain experience in the field and hone editorial and critical thinking skills.
Started in 1990, the Performance Journal is a printed forum created by and for artists, fostering the evolution of written and graphic languages that contemplate current issues of dance and performance. Published twice annually, the Performance Journal provides a unique space for critical rigor and multi-disciplinary readership. Writings are specifically linked to events, artists, trends, and ideas associated with the current and upcoming performance season in New York as well as nationally and internationally. The Performance Journal has focused on various topics including gender, environments, identity, technology, activism, dance writing, specific artistic visions, and, most recently, an exploration of how contemporary dance negotiates with the larger culture via a magazine format.

Critical Correspondence (Next call for applications: May 2015)
Internships are approximately 10hrs per week. Hours may be distributed unevenly depending on season and needs. The internship term is one year. During that time, the intern will receive free Movement Research classes and some workshops.
CC internship tasks:
- Transcribe/edit interviews
- Help with website maintenance
- Convert audio files into podcasts
- Keep a calendar or events, interviews, and other timely matters
- Participate in preparation of monthly e-newsletter
- Participate in editorial monthly meeting
- Deliver recorders from the Movement Research office to interviewers
The ideal candidate will have the following:
- An interest in engaging contemporary and experimental dance and/or performance work through language
- Familiarity with web platforms (especially Wordpress)
- Writing and editing skills
- Interview skills
- Ability to work independently
- Audio and video editing skills also greatly appreciated but not required
- Investment in the mission and goals of the publication

Mission and Goals of CC:
Critical Correspondence (CC) is an artist-driven project of Movement Research that aims to activate, develop and increase the visibility of critical discourse on dance and movement-based performance work. We initiate conversations and writings to map the language surrounding current practices and to establish a dialogue between artists and others who are engaged with this work. We also host contributions from artists/writers traveling, working in different localities or reporting from a particular working process.
