Full title: [Technology and Pop Culture in Performance: how are we feeling?] Obviously not everything matters to all people BUT The Biebs and The Kardashian-Wests and #memes and The Apple Watch, these things are giving us information about where we are and who we are. Engaging with popular culture, as opposed to discounting it, asks us to think about our present moment more multi-dimensionally. In this conversation with invited artist speakers, let us unpack a combination of popular media trends, iconography and the #internet with live, experimental performance and the potential for true resonance in this work.

Women dominate the dance and performance field in numbers, but not in visibility, ‘success,’ or positions of power. Let’s keep the issue at the forefront and explore how to rectify this. One of the biggest untapped resources is women helping and supporting other women more vocally and consciously—as the majority, our collective efforts would have a massive impact on leveling the field. In this panel, we’ll discuss how to effect change and meaningfully support the majority of our fellow practitioners. Any gender expression is welcome and all are encouraged to participate.

Panelists will discuss their various perspectives on the integration of puppetry and dance in live performance. Like dance, puppetry is a hands-on, physical art form. What happens when the puppet appears onstage? This conversation will explore how artists are bringing these two forms together in unique ways and how they complement and inform one another.

Artists with disabilities and artists whose work disrupts normative notions of what constitutes a dancing body will come together in conversation. We will consider the artistic work of the panelists and how it opens up possibilities for dance to move beyond narrow historical paradigms to include a more expansive range of physical experience and formal content.

This Studies Project will bring together dance artists who also work in the field of care-giving: end-of-life, beginning-of-life, navigators of illness and wellness. Why do many dancers become doulas? What is the overlap between guiding bodies through the cycles of life, and guiding bodies through space? What is it that draws dance artists to this profession? How do we acknowledge the specific needs of different communities and that all care is not equal/universal?

This reading group triangulates three poetic though potentially unrelated texts. First, a manifesto of the tropical museum that intervenes against a history of South American colonialism in thought, aesthetics, embodied practice, and arts real estate. Second, a series of accounts negotiating the thickness of forces, affects, and sense that cluster out and about our everyday lives. Lastly, and looping back to the first, we encounter an architectural analysis framing the domestic stage (Adolf Loos against Le Corbusier) with an eye turned towards interiority, surface, fashion, and theatricality, most significantly an exuberant dwelling of Josephine Baker.

Myriam Van Imschoot proposes her upcoming interview publication Conversations in Vermont as a springboard into a discussion about the interview as a tool to mine artistic thought, the legacies of Judson Dance Theater (also in respect to Neo-Judson) and the potential of dialogic formats for collaborative historical re/construction. This “listening” group constitutes the first public moment to test out research and interview materials as part of an interview publication under construction. Van Imschoot has been editing a body of interviews with two prolific American artists whose careers often intertwined and have been influencing generations of dance makers across the globe: Lisa Nelson and Steve Paxton. These interviews grew, over the years, into a mind-affair unique of its kind, and however raw and open, are ready to meet a public's ear.
