This conversation between professors from a variety of university dance departments will address the changing relationship between their programs and the field of dance. Panelists will discuss the emergence of dance studies and the model of the artist/scholar; issues of access, privilege, and the shifting economic structures of professional dance. Maura Donohue (Hunter College), Simon Dove (formerly of Arizona State University), Neil Greenberg (New School), Patricia Hoffbauer (Hunter College, Princeton University) and Mariah Maloney (SUNY Brockport) consider how these conditions affect their students and the way they structure their curricula. Critical Correspondence invites you to join us for a conversation about this critical alliance between academia and the field of dance.

In an environment where resources and opportunities to show fully produced work are limited, many artists are adapting to alternative formats for the creation and presentation of their work. How do these often short-form, multidisciplinary, low tech and/or multiple iteration structures affect both how artists make work and how that work is received? How do strategies, such as concentrating on performance as a practice, or creating in modular formats or formats adaptable to site and situation, complicate our concepts of authorship, production, reproducibility and artistic longevity? What are our ideal conditions for a dance?

Drawing from artistic practices that reveal or subvert the strenuous adversity of social control, this panel aims to address a myriad of perspectives on the embodiment of political resistance. Artists and scholars will address works and practices that were informed or influenced by the experience of undergoing the restrictions imposed by dictatorial regimes in the Middle East, South America and Eastern Europe. By approaching culturally diverse and unrelated geopolitical contexts, the event aims to give visibility to the bodies and interstices of experience that are not immediately seen by the foreign gaze.

MELT Reading Group with Biba Bell

A series of questions set our MELT reading group into whirring motion: Where does theatrical space begin and end? What kind of stage does a choreography construct and what kind of performer or spectator is it hoping to produce? Walk into the black box, where do we go? How is this space best considered—an environment, a cave, a body, an apparatus for capture? A space for ghosts, the gaze, consumption, immersion, hypervisibility, suspension of disbelief, spectacle, desire, mediation, excess, how does the theater (be)hold bodies in place? Does every performance construct its own theater? Let’s talk about this. Readings include excerpts from texts by Luce Irigaray, Jacques Derrida, and Boris Charmatz, interviews with luciana achugar, and a conversation between William Forsythe and Jennifer Tipton. Biba Bell (b. 1976, Sebastopol) lives and works in Detroit and NYC. Her performance work has most recently been shown at Times Square Arts, Visual Arts Center UT Austin, Insel Hombroich Germany, and NADA Fair NYC, and she performs internationally with choreographer Maria Hassabi. Bell writes about para-studio practice and dance’s domestic labor, is achingly close to defending her dissertation in the department of performance studies at New York University, and teaches in the Maggie Allesee Department of Theater and Dance at Wayne State University. MELT Reading Group with Susan Mar Landau

In the late 1960’s Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault, two writers writing on writing, each published now infamous essays on the topic of authorship; Barthes “The Death of the Author” and Foucault’s “What is an Author?”. These two seminal works were key in initiating what has become an ongoing discourse on the consequences of, responses to, and the revolts against “authorship” as a historically western, colonialist, and phallocentric institution; an institution that was both formed by and has perpetuated the modernist subject. In this evening’s discussion we will come together to re-contextualize the “authorship question” within the context of contemporary dance. In an art form that is historically simultaneously ephemeral, embodied, and perceived and produced by a plurality of bodies, how and by whom is subjectivity and authorship performed, and towards what ends? Of the work we see and make today, might the question to ask be not “What is an Author?” but rather “Who is a dance?” Susan Mar Landau is a New York City based dramaturg and interdisciplinary artist. As a dramaturg she has collaborated with choreographers Vanessa Anspaugh, Aretha Aoki, Maximilian Balduzzi, Daria FaÃ―n, Levi Gonzalez, Emily Johnson and Carlos Maria Romero. Landau holds a BA from Hampshire College, a M.A. in Performance Design and Practice from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, University of London, and a Graduate Certificate in Performance and Interactive Media Arts from CUNY. Placing Rancière’s “Emancipated Spectator” center stage, in tonight’s discussion we will move back and forth through time and texts to reflect on the “theater” and political philosophy’s parallel and, at times, collaborative exploration of spectatorship. Revisiting the territory both theorists and artists alike have mapped, we will cast our gaze and our conversation both from and towards the space of the spectator. Susan Mar Landau is a New York City based dramaturg and interdisciplinary artist.
