Wu Chien-Wei／Tussock Dance Theater
Wu Chien-Wei received his graduate’s degree from the Graduate Institute of Dance Performance at Taipei National University of the Arts, where he studied under Professor Lo Men-Fei, Professor Zhang Xiao-Xiong, and Professor Wu Su-Jun. In the course of his career he has been full-time troupe member of Compagnie Käfig in France and the Taipei Crossover Dance Company in Taiwan. Today, he is the director of Tussock Dance Theater, dividing his attention between performance and creative work, and theatre and film.
His 2008 work Aurora won the Australian Choreography Competition Jury Honor Award, while Development and Restructuring won the 2014 Taiwan Creative Dance Competition. In 2013, the year he established Tussock Dance Company, its inaugural work Two Bodies earned a Taishin Art Award nomination. Its second production, Embers, repeated this feat the next year. In 2017 he was nominated for the Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, being among the final five contestants in the dance category. In 2019 he was granted the Asian Cultural Council New York Fellowship as well as the Lo Men-Fei Dance Grant.
Wu Chien-Wei and his works have appeared at, among other festivals and events, the OzAsia Festival, la Biennale de Lyon, Montpellier Danse, Performing Taiwan, Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, the George Town Festival, Hong Kong Dance Festival, Hong Kong × Taipei Dance Exchange, Hong Kong New Vision Arts Festival, Beijing Dance Forward, Beijing Fringe Festival, Cross-Strait City Festival of Beijing, Guangdong Dance Festival, Dance Stages Shanghai, Singapore Arts Festival, Hochiminh International Dance Festival, Kuandu Arts Festival, AICD Dance Creation Showcase, Taiwan International Festival of Arts, Kaohsiung Spring Arts Festival, Taipei Biennial, Twelve Days Dance In China, and Macau CDE Springboard.
