Shannon Hummel is a choreographer, arts educator and community activist. She is the Founding Artistic Director of Shannon Hummel/Cora Dance, established in 1997. Driven to create access to the arts for all people, she opened The Cora Studio in the socio-economically divided community of Red Hook, Brooklyn in 2009, establishing the space as a home for her company and guest artists, a pay-what-you-can dance school, and a laboratory for addressing inherent divisions that create a lack of access to live performance and dance education for many people. Hummel’s work has been repeatedly critically celebrated (most recently called “a rare gem” by The New York Times) and can be seen as much in church basements, NYCHA public housing, parks, and homes as in many of the country’s most established venues. She is most proud to be the mom of a lively, lovely 10-year old boy named Henry.
