Julian Barnett makes dances that he performs in and also dances in dances that are made by his mentors and friends. His works usually hover around notions of transformation and empathy, through the lenses of philosophy, musicology, and the supernatural. He was born in Tokyo, Japan and is half-Japanese. He's grateful to have danced with many inspiring people including Jeanine Durning, Kota Yamazaki, Wally Cardona, and Steve Paxton amongst others. Julian is also grateful to have shared his work around the world, most recently and more locally at Gibney Dance and Danspace Project. He teaches in a variety of contexts, academic and non, and currently navigates between New York and Vermont, teaching at the University of Vermont in Burlington.
