Emily Waters and Mercy Viola

Emily and Mercy share a legacy of storytelling and bringing hope in the face of the unknown. This is part of their inheritance as sisters and their commitment to arts based healing strategies for survivors of violence, centering Afro-diasporic and queer survivors. Mercy is passionate about land sovereignty, reclaiming ritual and healing intergenerational trauma. Mercy incorporates these values as a Visual Artist, Performance Artist, Stand Up Comedian and Educator. Emily Waters is a Brooklyn-based poet, actor, teaching artist and story-teller. Emily is a member of the 2019 cohort of EMERGE fellows with the Hemispheric Institute of Performance and Politics, a 2019 Peace and Social Change Fellow with Columbia University and a Performance Project Fellow with the University Settlement. They believe that the arts can spark movements that can radically shift dominant social norms. They seek to constantly grow, evolve, question and integrate a diversity of mediums not only onto the stage, but on the block, in community gardens, and places where people gather outside of the confines of where mainstream arts events may take place.
