MRX is a vehicle to spur interaction and exchange among independent choreographers and their peers from within and outside the US. MRX enables Artists-in-Residence and faculty to travel outside their home environment for residency activities, informal showings, discussions and teaching opportunities.

International Exchanges:

MRX Sweden

The exchange brought Emma Kim Hagdahl to New York as an artist-in-residence with Movement Research Exchange from April 20 - June 20, 2011. While here, Emma performed on Movement Research at the Judson Church, spent 10 hours per week work in the studio, had access to classes and workshops, and saw and participated in numerous performances and events throughout New York.

Moving Dialogue/MRX Romania

This 3 part program took place through the Fall/Winter 2010-11 and Spring 2011 seasons. In October 2010, 7 artists from Romania spent 2 weeks in New York engaged in studio practice, seeing many performances, and showing their own work both at Movement Research at the Judson Church and at DTW. In January 2 more Romanian artists attended Winter MELT. Just recently, in May, 3 American chroeographers and 2 writers visited Romania for a 2 week exchange in Bucharet and Cluj. There, they shared studio practices, showed and created work, and visited various arts centers in the communities.

Solo in Azione Festival (Milan, Italy)

Ursula Eagly (CC editor) and Walter Dundervill (2010 A.I.R.) travel to Milan in June 2011 along with Milka Djordjevich and Jen Rosenblit. details soon...

La Caldera (Barcelona, Spain)

Artists Clara Tena and Victoria Macarte will participate in weeks 4 and 5 of Summer MELT 2011, August 1 - 12, 2011.

Danish Arts Council, Archauz Koreografisk Center (Denmark)

Kristine Kyhl Andersen/ WEGO came to New York from Denmark for one month (May-June), in 2010 culminating in a performance at Movement Research at the Judson Church. She collaborated with composer Niels Bjerg. During her residency she rehearsed, took part in an AIR roundtable, and participated in a performance at Bushwick Open Studios. http://www.danishperformingarts.info/

Zodiak (Helsinki, Finland)

Eeva Miulu came to New York from Finland for two weeks in March of 2010. While in residency Eeva rehearsed, participated in ongoing classes at Movement Research, and showed work at Movement Research at the Judson Church.

Dance Ireland and Arts Council of Ireland (Dublin, IR)

Philip Connaughton came to NYC in April 2011. In addition to performing at Movement Research at the Judson Church, which was followed by a post-performance discussion (a Studies Project focused on MRX) moderated by Deborah Jowitt, he used rehearsal space and had the opportunity to participate in classes at Movement Research. Michelle Boulé (faculty) went to Dublin for two weeks in September 2010. While there, she taught daily classes, rehearsed, and also took a workshop.

Past exchange artists include: Tara Brandel, Fergus Byrne, Gerald Casel (2006 A.I.R./faculty), Niamh Condron, Liadian Herriot, Juliette Mapp (faculty), Dierdre Murphy, Laura Murphy, Jimena Paz (2007 A.I.R./faculty), and Liz Roche.

Austrian Cultural Forum NY

Each season, the Austrian Cultural Forum partners with an organization in Austria to curate on artist for a performance on Movement Research at the Judson Church. During the Spring 2011 season, Doris Uhlich performed and spent 4 days visiting New York.

The Workshop Foundation (Budapest, Hungary; Dance Theater Workshop (New York, NY)

Márta Ladjánszki, Bea Gold and Adrienn Hód came from Budapest in Fall 2008, to perform at Judson and participate in post-performance dialogue. They had access to rehearsal space at Dance Theater Workshop, in order to prepare for the presentation of their work at Movement Research at the Judson Church “About Town”, at Danspace Project. www.trafo.hu; www.dancetheaterworkshop.org

Tanec Praha (Prague, Czech Republic)

Alex Escalante (2007 A.I.R.) participated in a residency with Tanec Praha in September 2008 during which he used rehearsal space, showed three evenings of work-in-progress for approximately 350 people in Prague, and participated in one post-performance dialogue. www.tanecpraha.cz

SEAD (Salzburg, Austria)

Vanessa Justice (2006 A.I.R.) participated in a residency with SEAD (Salzberg Experimental Academy of Dance) in August-September 2008. While in Salzberg Vanessa had access rehearsal space, showed work-in-progress followed by audience dialogue in the SEAD theater, and created a new 30-minute work on Bodhi Company. After the residency, Vanessa taught 5 weeks of classes in Contemporary Dance, Ballet & Improvisation at SEAD. www.sead.at

National Exchanges:

University of California, Irvine (Irvine, CA)

K.J. Holmes (faculty) went to UCI for one week in February 2011. While there, KJ taught daily classes and rehearsed. Ishmael Houston-Jones (faculty) went to UCI for two weeks in May 2011. While there, Ishmael taught daily classes and rehearsed. Ori Flomin (faculty), Jimena Paz (2007 A.I.R./faculty), and Pavel Zustiak (2008 A.I.R.) have also participated in this exchange.

UCI Dance Faculty Jodi Gates, Lisa Naugle and John Crawford, with guest artists Patrick Corbin and CorbinDances traveled to New York in October 2009 to give a Lecture/Demonstration at the Baryshnikov Arts Center. While in New York the artists met with A.I.R.s to talk about dance/media work as well as teaching a Dance/Media workshop. www.uci.edu

Ohio State University (Columbus, OH)

Maree Remalia came to New York in April 2011 for one week. She showed work at Movement Research at the Judson Church, followed by a post-performance discussion (a Studies Project focused on MRX) moderated by Deborah Jowitt. Maree had the opportunity to participate in ongoing classes at Movement Research.

Cori Olinghouse (2009 A.I.R.) went to OSU for one week in August of 2010. While there, Cori taught class, used rehearsal space, and led one post-class discussion.
