I'm wondering who could be singing this song...

a workshop led by Nancy Garcia

10am – 2pm

judson memorial church meeting hall, $20, register online

Garcia's choreographic practice involves scores created for dancers drawing from her own background in experimental music. Approaching dance composition as an expanded act, the dancer is considered as an expanded artist, who, even without previous musical training, has the potential to sing and make music. This potential is explored through vocalizing lyrics and melodies from remembered songs, working with set sound and movement phrase material, and creating/performing short improvisational scores.

Silent Ride II/ In Travel

an outdoor group event organized by Melanie Maar

12pm – 3:30pm

meet at battery park labyrinth, free

This year’s Silent Ride focuses on quiet perception of the body in travel. Maar leads a meditative series of movements through The Battery Park Labyrinth for an hour. Then, in silence, participants merge with passengers of the Staten Island Ferry for a round trip crossing of New York Harbor, reassembling later for dinner to break the silence (See Potluck Dinner below).

Dance, Music, and Silence: A Potluck Dinner

6pm

judson memorial church assembly hall, free

A meeting of minds, ears, and appetites. Join us for informal discussion on the state of music in the dance world, continuing an online discussion from MR Critical Correspondence. Why is the default soundtrack for dance not silence or ambient sound, but in fact canned music? And how did we come to think of dance and music as separate disciplines to begin with? Participants in Silent Ride II (see above) add insight into movement and listening gleaned from their experiences earlier in the day. Bring food or drinks to share.

Mark Beasley & Rose Kallal, Bil Bowen, Michael Mahalchick, Paige Martin, MICO, MV Carbon, Maarten Seghers/OHNO COOPERATION, Tom Slater

A concert/party/nonevent organized around collected performances and installations floating on simultaneous plateaus. Participating artists bring together a wide range of practices sharing connections in noise, actionism, dance, and psychogeographical transplantation. Utilizing an open-ended program, all activity and image are flattened to allow an intestinal tectonic overlay. The coincidental and intentional results stretch a membrane of liberation over the collected manifestations.
