March 1 - March 19
Monday, Wednesday, Friday
10:00 am-12:00 pm
Movement Research at Eden's Expressway
The class begins with a simple warm-up focusing on the breathing, internal structure, weight and the bodyÃââs articulations. Directed exercises give the opportunity to each of the students to observe and experience their own particularity and range of mobility. As the class progresses we look to integrate the parts of the body and the use of the floor. A grounded, alert body will be prepared for a dynamic phrase material that involves focus on the details, dropping in and out of the floor and fast changes of direction and levels. The class sometimes ends with an individual manipulation of the provided phrase. This class is the result of personal investigations and is influenced by many years of study and work with Jeremy Nelson, Barbara Mahler and Susan Klein, and more recently Alexander TechniqueÃâ and BodyMind-CenteringÃÂ.

Beauty, awkwardness, form, strength, weakness. Intended to be both laboratory and class, we will delve into the design of the body and it's potential within a given moment. Through open practices, stretch and placement, technique studies, and movement phrases habits will be discovered, challenged, and seen through a new lens. A concentration on the forces through the legs will lead to finding the range in separate body parts and ways to use your weight into the floor. My hope is for you to feel present and challenged and to leave class with a few answers and many more questions.

Supporting ongoing evolution and curiosity: my approach to facilitating movement practice is an inquiry into locating the individualÃââs priorities, interests and inspirations in the midst of specific given proposals. These improvisational propositions are based on layered functional approaches to the sensory, physical body in relation to our shifting individual experience (memory, desire, feeling, imagination, and perception). WeÃââll observe and question patterns, thoughts, and materials as they arise, and reinforce the inherent structures in what we do (action), imagine (perception) and feel (sensation). WeÃââll support these structures coming to form through recognition, repetition and mutual sharing. The progressive accumulation/repetition of these improvisations are used to build individual ÃâÅ“phraseÃâ material that will then be investigated, shaped and considered.

Using the morning technique class structure as a model, this class will focus on dance as a physical, conceptual and experiential practice, with an emphasis on the cultivation of presence inside of the form. Class will begin with imagery and gentle preparation culled from various bodywork modalities and will expand into choreographic structures, improvisations and performance constructs, exploring ways to engage with the material through precise and imaginative means.

We will take the time to investigate different states of physical awareness by using a three-fold structure. We will begin with a guided improvisation to observe the body and its natural movements through awareness of breath, weight, tension and release, taking time to notice the bodyÃââs qualitative presence moment-by-moment. We will follow by dancing within technical forms to support our range and work as dancers. We will conclude with a phrase that integrates concepts of weight, lightness, initiation and intention. The merging of the unconscious life of movement through observation and improvisation and the conscious attention to physical direction is part of the energizing practice we will explore in each class.

Old school technique class with new school questions. This is a warm-up for being a contemporary dance artist whatever that means. Real techniques, invented techniques, practicing presence, practicing hope, ÃâÅ“releasingÃâÂ, sweating, thinking, feeling, moving for no reason and finding out how. Exercises are boring but strangely important. Phrases are patriarchal but can be fun. Smart movers make good art. I am the teacher and I will do what I can.

10:00 am-12:00 pm
Movement Research at Eden's Expressway
In class we will tune our physical awareness through an experiential approach to moving. Merging both choreographic structures and improvisational modalities, we will be guided by the notion of investigation to look for an entry point where a dancerÃââs interpretation merges with choreographic direction. In practice, we will begin on the floor and make space to honor our bodiesÃââ unique progressions while gently moving towards embracing our full range of motion. We will examine concepts such as skeletal support, easeful joints, falling and momentum, and sequential movement. Class will continually be guided by an artistry and philosophy honoring individuality, embracing room for failure, and a constant questioning of our choices.

I invite you to come to class with the belief that your body has all it needs and that within the collective of the room, we expand our resources even further. WeÃââll use guided improvisations, which honor each individualÃââs unique pathways for engaging and understanding. WeÃââll also work with simple exercises and imagery, utilizing specific ideas about anatomy and kinesiological function. The relationship to our physical, energetic, mental, and emotional bodies will be a resource map for growth and information, helping us access states where creative engagement is the default choice! Class will end with an application of these ideas to choreographed phrase work. Influences include the Alexander Technique, Body-Mind Centering, Fitzmaurice Voicework, Franklin Method and BodyTalk.

Straddling traditional and contemporary practices of dance making, this class fosters a thorough understanding of the body as a resourceful vehicle capable of representing many points of view and expressive modalities. Technical and compositional exercises are designed to access multiple threads at once such as, greater range of motion and articulation, isolated and momentum-driven movement forms, rhythmic and kinesthetic intelligence, sense of scale, ascent and descent, injury prevention, and dancing that supports a balanced square orientation over a vertical axis, aligning heels/feet, pelvic floor, shoulders and skull while traversing through space in a mode that reflects a play between neutrality and shifting off center, a particular disposition that takes cues from performance, conceptual, and identity-based art.

Alexander Technique
Alexander Technique looks at the way we carry out our intentions. Often we use a process that is habitual, unconscious, and counterproductive. The technique offers a practice of staying open and alert in the moment, observing our familiar tensions and choosing to move without them. Beginning with the assumption that we are perfectly designed for movement and balance, we engage our mind to undo layers of interference, creating opportunity for change.

Re-Education of the Body - Klein Technique as taught by Barbara Mahler
This ongoing class is based in a movement technique in development since 1972. It provides the underpinnings to support all styles of dance technique, improvisation, as well as everyday movement. The purpose of the work done in class is to re-educate one's body with an interweaving of theory and practice on a physical and organic level. The result is clarity and sureness of movement, and a new level of understanding the innate intelligence of the body. A body of work, it is also a way for dancers to be treated, respected and to be seen as individuals. The main thrust of the work is for dancers to find their own essence, their identity and integrity and take that into movement. In order to move most efficiently it is necessary to let go of the muscles that fix the body into a set and locked configuration, holding us back from moving. When the bones are aligned we become connected, powerful and strong. The body becomes efficient and alive. The class is open to all levels, dancers and non-dancers alike. www.barbaramahler.net

Skinner Releasing Technique Intensives
The Skinner Releasing Technique is a movement-based and imagery-based process of discovery. SRT enables one to discover their own human idiosyncrasies: their own specific mechanical logic, the intuitive awareness of their own neuro-muscular system, and the existence of their own imagistic realities. The very nature of somatic techniques is such that a student may or may not fully integrate the various concepts within a given time frame. However, the intended long term result is a mature person who is a self-motivated and self-propelled critical thinker. The SRT pedagogy is highly structured and rigorous and yet the classes unravel within a sense of ease and mystery. Hands-on tactile partner graphics, structured improvisations, and guided imagery allow the student to find clarity within the physical self. In addition to becoming better movers and dancers, we happen upon empathy which in turn can lead to compassion. This class takes place ONLY on the following dates: March 20, April 17, May 29, June 19. Each class goes from 12-6pm and costs $50.

THIS WORKSHOP IS SOLD OUT. ÃâÅ“What if where I am is what I need,Ãâ is not an examination of what I need but an examination of the question ÃâÅ“What if where I am is what I need?Ãâ What if less is more is not less? What if dance is how I practice my relationship with my whole body in relationship to the space where I am dancing in relationship to each passing moment in relationship to my audience? Page/Stage Your Silence Through Embodiment WORKSHOP NOW FULL
We move to de-contain. We move to re-member and forget. Our bodies are containment of noises and silences of our memories that are constantly affecting how we live our lives now. This workshop explores our unshared, untold stories through embodiment. It is a practice to give voices to our muted memories. Using both writing and moving as forms of embodiment, we will break and un-break our silence through bodily thinking with the question "How can we use words as we use movement?" Our bodies speak louder than words, but as we search for words and inscriptions to "match" what our bodies have spoken, it can become performative writing. We will use writing as a treasure hunter of dance and silence. This class will start with a silent warm-up leading into improvisation and composition. We will explore several layers and dimensions of silence in and outside of our bodies. There will be showing of our materials utilizing what we created-both individually and collectively. The showing as a practice of sharing/caring will have both aspects of page and stage (meaning a printed booklet/journal and a performance at the end of the workshop). Pre-registration recommended.

The Presence of Space
In this intimate two-day workshop we will start with touch to facilitate awareness of internal and external space and as a means of warming up our sensed communication capacities. From there we will work in duet forms that activate the dynamic presence of space. This will lead to solo practices built from the process of touching, dancing together and listening with each other. We will work with sensory and conceptual space, activating physical imagination through energetic modes of moving and communicating with each other. We will go from there.

Deconstructing Ballet for Contemporary Dancers
This workshop focuses on the deconstruction of movement into technical basics that dancers from varied backgrounds can understand. Everyone learns. We work from the bottom up, from foundaÃÂtion to anatomically sound, honest movement. We work on the specifics of how one learns. It is the investigation of working from the inside out, from placing the bones where the muscles are allowed to function effortlessly and efficiently, thus discouragÃÂing muscular overuse. We remove artificial affecÃÂtions, leaving just the core technique, the pure physiÃÂcal architecture of the body. The ultimate goal of this study is to appreciate function as beauty. Everything discussed gets reconstructed back into movement and can easily be applied to other forms of dance.

Presence and Performance
Over the last two decades, choreographer RoseAnne Spradlin has been synthesizing studies in BodyÃÂMind CenteringÃÂ and Chinese Medicine to arrive at strategies for internal cultivation and training for contemporary dance/performance artists. These two classes offered as part of the 2010 MR Festival will explore how the performerÃââs body/mind state contributes to the creation of tone and meaning in performance. Beginning with explorations of the cellular-level of movement, the classes will use guidÃÂed somatizations and personal and group improvisaÃÂtions to explore key concepts in embodiment. No previous knowledge of BMCÃÂ or CM is necessary, however, an open mind is essential!
