Morning Class
We will take the time to investigate different states of physical awareness by using a three-fold structure. We will begin with a guided improvisation to observe the body and its natural movements through awareness of breath, weight, tension and release, taking time to notice the body’s qualitative presence moment-by-moment. We will follow by dancing within technical forms to support our range and work as dancers. We will conclude with a phrase that integrates concepts of weight, lightness, initiation and intention. The merging of the unconscious life of movement through observation and improvisation and the conscious attention to physical direction is part of the energizing practice we will explore in each class.

FEBRUARY 2 CLASS CANCELLED. CLASSES RESUME FEBRUARY 4. || We will practice being in pleasure and giving our bodies a voice. A practice of growing a new body, as one would grow a plant; a utopian body; a sensational body; a connected body; an anarchic body; a body full/filled with pleasure, with love and with magic…………. with a brain that melted down to the flesh, the bones, the guts, the skin ... and with eyes that see without naming and see without knowing.

C O R E M O T I O N Inner Structure
This class focuses on the inner structure of the body. The foundation of the structural focus is the alignment of the body and its relation to gravity. These principles are put into practice by means of a system of exercises using Qi Gong principles and forms. These exercises include deep release of the abdominal and visceral area with breathing and a simple succession of postures, and movements that allow the practitioner to progressively let go of extra tensions and activate the energy centers. As a result of this practice: - The tendons and psoas muscle soften and strength, enhancing an ease of connection between head, neck, back and limbs. - The nervous system relaxes and the individual can access the core of the body as well as the energy centers, gradually generating a sense of buoyancy. Once the student has understood the structural principles of these exercises they can be easily applied to any kind of movement or situation. C O R E M O T I O N is a movement and performing practice developed over thirty years of research by Daria FaÃŻn. It is rooted in Asian philosophy of the body.

We are not just a body or a mind. We are unique individuals with spirit and intelligence. The work in class engages us in a process that facilitates change. We work to right the pelvis on top of the legs, with the deep connections closest to the bones, and free the upper body and spine to move with ease and expression. Working on the level of the bone, we can let go of unnecessary tensions and habits which hold our bodies and minds in misalignment and misconception. Here we find better function, creativity, and well-being. JOANNA KOTZE SUBS FEBRUARY 24&26, MARCH 10 | FARA GREENBAUM SUBS MARCH 3,5,12 | CLASS CONTINUES THROUGH AUGUST 20, 2015

Contact Improvisation – The Basics
Contact Improvisation, initiated by dancer Steve Paxton in 1972, is a dance practice that plays with the physics between bodies and gravity. Using partnering skills such as rolling, releasing, weight exchange, falling, lifting and catching, and expanding range of spatial choice, the practice helps one move within sensation and disorientation, access moveable supports and tune to the use of touch, momentum, resistance and flow in physical contact as well as in solo play. This is an introductory class for those with little to no experience with Contact Improvisation or those who would like to revisit the basics. BRADLEY TEAL ELLIS WILL TEACH FOR K.J. TEACHING FOR BARBARA MAHLER We are not just a body or a mind.

TEACHING FOR EMILY FAULKNER ON 3/25/15. Alexander Technique looks at the way we carry out our intentions. Often we use a process that is habitual, unconscious, and counterproductive. The technique offers a practice of staying open and alert in the moment, observing our familiar tensions and choosing to move without them. Beginning with the assumption that we are perfectly designed for movement and balance, we engage our mind to undo layers of interference, creating opportunity for change.

C O R E M O T I O N Inner Structure
TEACHING FOR DARIA FAIN JUNE 16, 23 & 30.

[TEACHING FOR MELANIE MAAR THROUGH SEPTEMBER 15, 2015] Utilizing principles and exercises based in Qi Gong, we will see and sense into our own selves to identify and engage the systems of the body. Through the practice of forms, meditations, and visualizations, we will work to navigate the anatomical in order to enhance our relationship to the universe, creating a connection between the corporeal and the energetic. This class is an offering; a space created to give time to the cultivation of the inner life force, and an opportunity to create internal and external shift, balance, rejuvenation.

Global Underscore
The Underscore is a long-form dance improvisation structure developed by Nancy Stark Smith and practiced worldwide. The form includes contact improvisation and allows for a full spectrum of physical forms and changing states, often including periods of quiet internal activity and other times of higher energy and interactive dancing. The Underscore's undirected practice affords simultaneously a framework for research, a forum for play, and an opportunity to experience collective improvised composition. Global Underscore was originally conceived in 2000 and organized for a decade by French dancer Claire Filmon in collaboration with Nancy Stark Smith. Coinciding with the summer solstice, this annual event invites dancers at sites all around the world to practice the Underscore simultaneously and share their experiences with a global community of practitioners. Now in its 15th year, Underscore NYC proudly hosts Global Underscore 2015.

In this class I offer space for a self nurturing, awake state that enables this Qi Gong based work with principles of energetic and anatomic dynamics. We explore methods related to the Chinese 5 Element System through movement, image activation, sounding, meditation, theory and partner work. I approach the somatic, artistic and psychic as synergetic realms. Its a quest to expand possibilities of being and relating within our environment that can deepen our individual practice and ways.

Adult Ballez is a dance class that explores the gender-binaried, Imperialist movements of Ballet, radically re-imagining those oppressive tools in a site of liberatory queer play. Shifting the focus away from traditional virtuosity, we explore the virtuosity of genderqueer embodiment, questioning the value-systems that are physically manifest within us, while we embody them. Starting with Authentic (fantasy) Movement, we then warm-up at the barre, and then move into center to turn, jump and practice partnering. Sunday Process Lab
While creating performance that examines the oscillating natures of Mental Illness, Addiction, and Systemic Poverty, I'm interested in engaging with artists, health practitioners, and all those invested in either of these conditions/structures, to exchange tools and explore the capacity of dance/embodiment to tell story, capture emotion, and deepen listening. I will share text, tools, and processes I've used thus far, and ask participants to reflect on/identify/share their own practices. Together we will create and discuss, working at our fullest capacity as movers and thinkers, drawing on each other's tools to challenge our creative habits and/or inhabit new ideas. The room benefits from a spectrum of movers, thinkers, and practitioners- so if movement and creative practice interests you, please join us for this Sunday Workshop.

Letting Music Open You, Letting Your Mind Structure.
The exact structure of this lab will depend on how many participants are present. Each person should bring a piece of music they love very much (bring more than one if you can't decide) and we will be starting with the emotional life-force of the song that moves you, a channeling place of freedom. Once we have something that is connected to the creator we will work on using logic, technique and structure to come up with a phrase that embodies the soul of the song and yourself, and also has a designed container that is not restrictive.

A Choreographic Mind
I teach from the point of view that making is an endless quest with ever shifting ground. I encourage an attitude of fueling work with one's questions, not regarding plans or themes as prerequisites. I regard teaching as a conversational mode; my exercises are proposals in action. I am interested in giving students the ability to recognize and access states necessary to making work; intuition, perception, cognition, interiority, emotional distance, spontaneity, pleasure, will, reflection, humor.

Composing Relationships
Not as beginners, but with a beginner’s mind, we’ll examine and question the relationships (actual and conceptual) that we want to manifest in our dances. We’ll work through a variety of exercises to gather compositional tools in how to extend movement from one person to another. Please note: we’ll be working in a territory where lifts occur by happenstance, not design, and in a world where contact improvisation has yet to be invented.

The Dancer is a Haunted House I would like to share some improvisation structures and containers for research that I have found fruitful in making and performing. We will invite the seen and unseen murmurings of past, present, and future to surface in spontaneous dancing, writing, sounding, and speaking--using the principles of automatic writing to structure improvisations that move between language and body mind. We will use our imaginations to extend the boundaries of the self into the unknown so as to be more weathervane than conductor: pointing the direction of the wind, not making the wind happen. Participants of any movement background or experience level welcome.

IDD Wkshp: Comprehension and Constitution
Dancers: Comprehension and Constitution Being Understood and Making Things Up... | If the performer is an experiential author, who's the editor? We will discuss and enact ways to activate the plastic border between comprehension and constitution as dancers -- how we are understood, what we are part of, what makes us up and what we make up. Not knowing the outcome of a process in contemporary dance practices is a well-respected part of the process of making it up, but knowing precisely what we are doing and how we are doing it is an integral part of being a dancer. Where does the knowing start and the not knowing begin? When does the performer's immersion in their own experience diffract? What is the performer's authorial role in relation to that moment of diffraction? This workshop will include talking, reading, writing and performance scores.

What is the performer, choosing, drawing on and why? What is a performer's product? How can we best speak about and find a place to store the complex influences of colleagues, weather, place and culture on our movement through and with them? This workshop will include talking, reading, writing and performance scores.

IDD Wkshp: Recomposition
During our last creation, "Synopsis of a Battle", we developed a physicality based on decomposition and articulation of shapes drawn from different dance styles we knew from our own physical experience (ballet, Cunningham, release technique, modern, etc.) as well as "cheap imitations" of various techniques, movements and forms that we've seen that remain in our memory or imagination. We will play and recompose at will with all those facets lying within ourselves and give shape to them. It is a work with the body that tries to make visible the various layers that compose one body history. Every individual story is the proof that all those disparate elements can find a coherence in the body and its representation. Facing it is an attempt to find a coherence for oneself.

GILLS AND BELLOWS In this workshop we will use our proprioceptive awareness to access our voices. Through a series of intertwining exercises and methodologies we will investigate pitch, timbre and phonemic resonance as felt experiences, working to translate this somatic knowledge into muscular-skeletal form. This work is rooted in physical practice. No prior experience with the voice is required.

PUBLIC AMBIGUITY This Process Lab will take place in a semi-public gallery space and will facilitate methods and approaches for being ambiguous in plain sight. We'll organize a series of overlapping activities whose meaning and practice are unclear at the outset. Through these durational activities we will explore what kinds of space we can collectively hold open for passersby and what happens when an audience forms. The workshop will begin with a group vocal/speech warm up, a simple physical warm up and a discussion, followed by a two-hour performance. Please bring a set of key words, an object and/or costume piece that you would like to work with throughout the Lab.

MAKING USE, MAKING MOVE "I thought I was being asked to construct a physiological self, to balance space and localize sensations, when all the time they were clamoring for more." -Frantz Fanon, "The Lived Experience of the Black Man." "I want to insist on perceiving the body as intelligent and multivalent." -Ananya Chatterjea, Butting Out How does "lived experience" get into performance? Performance is experience, it is live, living, lived; it is also more than physiology, sensation, space, and sight. Our sociopolitical bodies, our kinesthetic bodies: what do they do together? what do we do with them when we dance? can our untraceable gestures, as Michel de Certeau offers, "escape without leaving" the ordering systems that demand so much? how do we make mysterious use of what we've been given, and what our bodies have been given to be?

THE PERFORMANCE STATE AS PRACTICE Using Larissa Velez-Jackson’s performance practice, Star Crap Method, as a guide; this workshop employs and blurs speech, movement, looking, sounding, and writing. Practitioners will examine how these forms can relate to exponentially multiply our meaning making in real-time. With performance as a tool, we experience a state of being that annihilates the boundaries between perception, improvisation, and composition.

Family Day
Join dance artists Ilona Bito and Donna Costello for a day of family friendly movement workshops at BRIC in partnership with Movement Research. In each session, we will invite our bodies to twist and turn, bounce and slide, rise and fall, to ride the wave of dance. Using inspiration from the art and architecture in the BRIC gallery, we will tap into the imaginative expression each young person brings by exploring, investigating and creating in dance. Come activate the space with us as we engage our senses with music, imagery and movement at BRIC! 3- 6 year olds, First session from 2-3pm led by Ilona Bito 7-10 year olds, Second session from 3-4pm led by Donna Costello Participants are encouraged to wear sneakers and families are encouraged to join in the fun.

NOWHERE WITHOUT YOU "For if I am confounded by you, then you are already of me, and I am nowhere without you. I cannot muster the 'we' except by finding the way in which I am tied to 'you,'" claims Judith Butler in Precarious Lives. Let's talk about how we are tied to each other as makers, performers, citizens. Let's talk about choreographing as coalition building. Let's talk about performing and looking as acts of solidarity. Let's talk about bodies as carriers of histories, 'movement as transmission,' and language as somatic connection 'between the visible and invisible, clear and obscure, private and public, given and with-held,' (quotes taken from Petra Kuppers' Waltzing disability culture: Moving history with Raimund Hoghe).

GROWING A BODY In this Process Lab we will practice being in pleasure and giving our bodies a voice. A practice of growing a new body, as one would grow a plant; a utopian body; a sensational body; a connected body; an anarchic body; a body full/filled with pleasure, with love and with magic . . . with a brain that melted down to the flesh, the bones, the guts, the skin . . . and with eyes that see without naming and see without knowing.

EXACTLY DO THEY DO Time. Space. Rhythm. Pacing. Breath. These words describe how we perceive bodies, and also words. How does performance perform? How does poetry perform? How does performance perform poetry and poetry perform performance? How fast can you ask that question? What is taking so long with our drinks? Is that Gertrude Stein at the next table, or Fred Moten? Let's look at some scores and poems and poem-scores and what all and think about these important questions. With any luck we'll go wildly off topic.
