MARÝA WETHERS has been dancing and performing in NYC since 1998, most extensively with Yanira Castro | a canary torsi+ Company, Faye Driscoll, and Joyce S. Lim. Since 2008 she has been studying and collaborating with Daria Faïn, including commissioning, producing, and performing the solo TARGET::furnace at Dance New Amsterdam (February 2010), conceived in collaboration with and choreographed by Faïn. She curated the Out of Space @ BRIC Studio series for Danspace Project from 2003-2007 with a particular focus on work representing the perspectives and experiences of artists who are of color, queer, and/or female. Her writing, UnCHARTed Legacies: women of color in post-modern dance, was published in the 25th Anniversary Movement Research Performance Journal #27/28 (2004). Recent activities include performing her own work at Movement Research at the Judson Church and the BAAD Ass Women Festival and participating in "There's nothing neutral about bodies" discussion/event through CLASSCLASSCLASS. Upcoming activities include performing with Mina Nishimura at BAX on May 13-15, speaking on the Movement Research Studies Project “Commissions” panel about dancers who commission choreographers with choreographer/collaborator Daria Faïn on May 18, and curating Sorry I Missed Your Show for Gibney Dance Center on July 27. An expanded version of TARGET::furnace will premiere at The Chocolate Factory in November 2011.
Marýa is the Program Manager at Dance Theater Workshop and has been a member of the Programming Department since 2007. She graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1997 with a Bachelor of Arts in Dance with High Honor, cum laude and a Minor in African-American Studies.
